My husband came home yesterday and was kind of excited about naming our little girl Sylvia and calling her Sylvie. I think it's sweet but I know it's such an old name. What do you think?
I had a beautiful boss named Sylvia. She still wasn't enough to get the 'old lady' thing out of my head. I just cannot see this name on anything but old women, and that turns me off of the name. I mean, it isn't awful and I suppose I can see the appeal of it... I just wouldn't do it.
Old names just need one young face to wear it, and it often becomes young again...this one might be a perfect 100-year-rule candidate.
And personally, I try to like this name. I has some nice qualities (500s on SSA names, nice meaning, historical etc) but all I see is saliva. It's much better than Sylvie, but just not my style.
Old names nowadays are becoming really popular to use. My daughter's first name is a traditional name and her middle name is Daisy. Lucy and Eleanor are on my list for the next baby as well as Kathryn. SYLVIA is a beautiful name and I've seen a few kids on the internet being named Sylvia. I also grew up with a Sylvia (I'm 25), so it isn't "too old" at all! Congratulations on your daughter - your little Sylvie!
I love it. It's my middle name and for a while in grade school, I insisted my parents call me Sylvia instead of my first name. Currently, I use my mn more than most people do.
I don't like using family names and that's the only reason I wouldn't have considered it for DD. I have a friend who recently named his daughter Sylvia and I was a little sad that I'll never use the name myself. I like it that much.
I just read through all the responses after posting my own. I have to laugh sometimes at the notion of "old lady" names. It's so cultural. I know quite a few younger Hispanic Sylvia/Silvias- women who are in their 20s and 30s. I have never thought of it as an old lady name.

I would have to go with this. It is NMS.
