Today was my first day back at work for the new school year, and we found out that our disability insurance provider is changing, effective Sept. 1. Because of this, even though I've been paying for disability since way before I got pregnant, it's possible I won't be able to file a claim for my maternity leave since I didn't have insurance through the new company before getting pregnant. I won't know for another week+, when the reps for the new company will be on campus. This could completely screw us over, since we can't afford for me to be out 6-8 weeks with no pay at all (like, we wouldn't be able to make our car payments/insurance/utilities). With the disability payments, we'll just barely be able to squeak by as it is. Ugh. This was NOT a good way to start the morning today. T&P that I'll still get to file a claim when the baby comes would be very much appreciated!

This is true for sure with health insurance, but with the current disability company, I was told last year that if I was already pregnant when I signed up, they wouldn't cover the time after childbirth... which is why I've paid over $150/month for the past year. I'm hoping that the provisions of Obamacare that say pregnancy cannot be considered a pre-existing condition apply to disability companies as well.
I hope everything works out for you! I found out that my disability won't kick in until 30 calendar days after the baby is born. I didn't switch policies in time and pregnancy is a pre-existing condition! I would think that it would be like regular medical insurance that when you go from one policy to another with no time skipped in coverage then coverage would be continuous.
GL.
Aww...I hope everything works out ok! My disability kicks in when I go out for maternity leave, but we ran into this problem when i had my open-heart surgery last year. They told me everything was fine, Short term disability would kick in...and since i would have to be out of work for over a month, and yet was still required to make insurance premiums, that worked out perfectly. I found out after my $144,000 surgery that I wasn't covered, we scrambled to get funds to scrape up minimun payments.
I know it's not much help...but unfortunately it happens all too often =/ GL with everything, I hope you have a happy ending
