after a month of dealing with the whole dog adoption process, we found out the place prefers to place their dogs in homes that already have a dog for socialization...WHY DIDN'T YOU MENTION THIS SOONER?! ugh...so after 3 interviews, a home interview and 2 hour long calls to our references, we didn't get the damn dog...
I'm becoming bitter..I wasn't upset when I heard..I'm getting kinda used to hearing bad news...
Re: stupid dog adoption place--NTTCALR
I'm so sorry honey. That is freaking BS.
Honestly, this is a reason we got Scout from a breeder - we couldn't believe the ropes they wanted us to jump through to rescue. After the emotional hell of last year, I couldn't take more loss and rejection.
We just did research, made sure the breeder was really responsible and had a good reputation with the breed rescue groups.

Oh I am so sorry! That doesn't make any sense! There are so many dogs that need homes and they are unwilling to not give you the pup because you don't already have one?!? That's infuriating!
As a side note, I don't know if you have your heart set on a certain breed or something but a rescue group I work for was asking for foster homes (or permanent homes) yesterday. It is a Belgian Malinois rescue but of course only if you are interested.

Wow. I'm seriously surprised they didn't mention that sooner.
I call complete BS. If you're willing to work with the dog (classes, etc), it seriously shouldn't matter if there is another dog in the household. Grrrr stupid rules.
I also recommend petfinder.com. It's how we found our kitty at the humane society.

Isn't it sad how these animals NEED good homes, but they can say no for the simple things? Don't get me wrong...I think that folks wanting to adopt animals should go through a screening or something to make sure the animals will be safe, but come on! If you can take care of the dog, and will treat it with love, does it REALLY matter if you have a dog already?! How frustrating!
I also used petfinder for our kitten. She was in a Humane Society a few counties over, and we had no trouble at all.
Good luck!
That's crap! I'm sorry you didn't get the dog and that the agency wasn't up front about their requirements.
We got a dog from our local humane society and he was great (we had to give him away due to allergies, but he's still in the family). It's a great way to go. Or if you want a specific breed, you can look for a breeder. Good luck! I hope you find a great puppy dog for you!
Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle!

DH and I got 'pre approved' with multiple adoption places and yeah, it's a PITA. I totally get why they do it. It's much better to make the process a bit more difficult and place a dog in a forever home ONCE, than to let a dog be placed on a whim and then given up a week later.
That said, DH found Zoey on a Petsmart bul. board. The owners couldn't take care of her and were going to have to give her to a shelter if they couldn't find a good home.
Now I pay attention and pretty much every time I check-out there's another dog listed there. Craigslist also has several people who are moving, working long hours, or for some other reason can't care for their dog any more. This route you skip all the red tape and adoption fees.
We met Zoey THAT day, went to lunch to talk about it, decided we wanted her, and drove home with her in the car.
Wow, I'm so sorry. We found Guinness through Petfinder as well. Most rescues are more than happy to work with you. Now you know what interview question to ask them!
I hope you get your puppy soon!

Some rescues are so picky it only ends up hurting the dogs in the long run. When we were looking for a papillon the rescue requirements were insane. Stuff like "the dog is never to be left unattended for more than 2 hours." Um, yeah, so only unemployed people with no lives can have dogs? I think not.
I'm sorry they wasted so much of your time. What breed/type of dog are you looking for? I've found toy breed rescues to be the most neurotic.
ETA: It also sounds like this rescue is half clueless. Socialization has almost no relationship to other dogs in the home. Socialization is the process of teaching your dog that the world is a safe and welcoming place. It is getting them used to people in funny hats, street sweepers and the like. If you aren't looking for a specific, hard to find breed start walking through the shelters and browsing Craigslist for owner re-homes.
