s/o Kegel Reminder - technique?

So I understand that Kegels are important and I want to do them right. Is it about squeezing and many repeats or squeezing and holding for a longer time and then repeating?  What are the kegel routines that you have heard of (ie, do for 5 mins/day etc)?

  • I've been doing it mostly when I am peeing.  I go to the bathroom and then stop "midstream" and count to 5 and then let go.  Not sure if that is right but that's what i'm doing

Don't do them while you pee- you can give yourself a UTI. But you know the muscles that takes, so do it at other points throughout the day.

I try to make it a point to do them when I'm bumping and watching TV, that way at least I'm multi-tasking even on my down time.

This! And from what I've read it is better to hold them a little longer than to just squeeze as many times as possible. You are also not really supposed to put any effort into the release, just kind of let it go. And I think it's recommended to build up the number of "reps" you do to like 10 in a row and then do that several times a day!

  • It's hard, but I try to hold each one for 15 seconds, and do 15 sets. I read it somewhere, but since I can't even remember the source, I have no idea if this method is any better than any other.

  • I've only of doing Kegels to help with orgasms (Samantha talks about it in Sex and the City). How do they help with pregnancy? With labor?

I believe (and other ladies please correct me or add to this if I am off base) they help strengthen the muscles around the pelvic floor.  This can help you when pushing as well as help you recover from child birth. Also, I hear that later on in pregnancy or in subsequent pregnancies women can pee a little when they sneeze or cough and making these muscles strong can help prevent that.  Also, knowing how to squeeze these muscles during sex can increase pleasure for your partner Wink
