Taking a 4 Month Old to the Zoo??

I have 3 weeks off work, and I resolved to do one new thing with him each day before I go back.  In thinking about things to do, I kept getting excited about all these things he's really still too young for---going to the zoo, the dinosaurs exhibit that's in town, pumpkin patches and petting zoos, etc. If this is your first, when are you going to start taking your LO to stuff like this?  Do you think its wayyy too young to try to take him to the zoo?

TIA!

Re: Taking a 4 Month Old to the Zoo??

  • I took DD to the zoo when she was 8 weeks old.  She had no clue about any of it, but we have two other kids (my step kids) and they were into it, so it made it fun.  I think now DD would be more awake, alert, want to look around more, but still probably wouldn't get it.  But it might be fun just for something to do to get out of the house.  I think the petting zoo sounds fun too because at this age I've been using LO's hand to "pet" our dogs and she LOVES it, so I think at this age she'd really dig feeling all the different animal's fur and stuff.  But my concern would be germs and I would make sure to wash her hands really good once we were done there.

  • DD has already been to the zoo 3x and a children's museum once. I think it's never too early:) I probably enjoyed it more than she did at this age.

Heck no.  I know Evelyn would love the zoo.  She's very observant and loves to look at our dog, and the trees outside.  Will she "get it" 100%  Probably not.  But she'd have a good time and its fresh air!

And we fully plan on taking her to a pumpkin patch this Fall.

  • When DD#1 was 4 months old we went to the pumpkin patch, she loved it and loved the pumpkins...tried to put every pumpkin she saw in her mouth.  I plan on taking DD#2 with us in the Fall to the zoo, to the children's museum, to the pumpkin patch. Your DS may get more out of it than you think :)  4 months is such a great age...they start noticing more things around them and reacting to them.  At least that is what I remember with DD#1 :)
  • We took J to the museum here in town about a week ago. It's mostly outdoors and has animals he can look at and pet. I think he really enjoyed looking at the animals. He was wiped before we had done everything of course but I think overall he enjoyed himself. My LO is 5 months, not 4, but I still think if you have one near you a zoo wouldn't be totally crazy. Just remember he'll probably get sick of it a lot quicker than you will.

  • We took our son to the zoo 2 weeks ago because we had family visiting and they wanted to go.  He certainly didn't get that it was the zoo, but he loved watching all of the people and being outside all day.
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

  • I'll take him to the zoo when he knows what's going on and can recognize the animals. We'll probably go next spring or summer.
  • DS has been to the zoo 2 times already. He loved it!

  • we've been to the zoo 3 times, twice w/ other kids, once by ourself.  She looks around, and once in a while will be checking out an animal I think, but its nice for her to be out of the house and doing something different.  She loves grabbing things so we'll go apple picking and pumpkin picking and I'm sure she'll enjoy touching the different things.  We also go to book stores, they have more variety than libraries and she likes grabbing and smacking the board books.  I bring her to the park sometimes, she can sit in a baby swing and I push her a little bit, I'll also bring her down the slide

  • DD has been to the zoo 4 times already, including a visit when she was only 2 weeks. However, we have another LO who loves going and we have a membership. DD slept through every visit and got nothing out of it. Honestly, if YOU want to go, go for it. But I wouldn't expect your LO to get much out of it at this age. My DS only really started to love it this summer.

  • I took my LO about 3 weeks ago, he was almost 4 months.  He loved it!  The fresh air, new things to look at.  I think it was great.
  • I took both of my girls to the zoo starting at like 3 weeks. We are members so it's something we do very often, usually about once a week. I always took them places though, I wasn't one of those "must keep the baby inside and protected" mothers. They've been to stores, malls, the zoo, the pool, the park, the pumpkin patch, etc, all at what some would probably say is too early of an age. As long as YOU are comfortable taking your LO to these places, it's absolutely fine. I think the exposure and socialization does nothing but good things for them (but that's just me!). Just don't expect a reaction from him Wink.
