I have a medela pump in style which has served me well. However, this past month I have not had an easy time building on my freezer stash. Last month I had to go away for business and that did a number on my stash. I can't even go in the freezer and count what I have right now because it would depress me.
At this point if I had to go away for business next week I don't think I would have enough supply to cover the trip. I have no trips planned, but I am thinking worst case scenario.
So, I really need to do anything possible to amp up my supply and get that freezer stash back on track. I came up with the idea this weekend to rent a hospital grade pump. I remember when LO was in the hospital how strong that pump seemed compared to the in style. So, I was thinking that maybe one or two months rental, and pumping at home 3x a day would give me the boost in supply I need to get me over the next hump.
BFing has been tiring lately, but I am committed to doing everything to make this work.
So, thanks for sticking out this long if you did. Has any rented a hospital pump for this purpose?
BTW- baby will be 5 months next week.
Re: Renting hospital pump to build freezer stash
I have not rented a hospital grade but I did go out and buy the Hygeia Enjoye which is a professional grade for a similar purpose. I have had a lot of stress this past month (had to put my eldest kitty to sleep after a long battle of declining health among other stressors) and my supply TANKED. I had gone in a matter of 2 days from 1 pumping session (morning session) getting 9oz after feeding to getting 4oz before feeding on a good day. It also didn't help my supply however that my pump motor was going out because it couldn't keep up with the added pumping sessions needed to try to maintain some semblance of my old supply.
The price I have noticed for the Symphony rental for a 2mth period is roughly the same as the Hygeia is to buy.
I would suggest looking into both options, and also if you haven't thought about it herbal options are highly praised on this board. Mother's Milk Tea and Fenugreek seem to be popular recommendations.
Thank you. I hadn't heard about the Hygeia Enjoye. I wish I could test drive it first (although it looks like there is a 21 day guarantee).
I don't really like using Fenugreek (smelling like maple syrup)...
So, the Hygeia Enjoye is strong? What if I wanted to continue to nurse as much as possible (all but 2 sessions per day) and start pumping after each session maybe? Do either of you do this and still build a good supply?
I didnt like Fenugreek either, took it only for 2w before the smell made me want to gag
It does have a 21 day guarantee that if you dont like it you can return it.
I am EBF but pump so DH can feed him once a day and have enough stored if something happens and I am put on a med incompatible with BF for a while. It doesn't "feel" strong, meaning my nips dont feel like they are being sheered off my body, but the truth is in the bottles. Like I posted before, my morning output had dropped to 4oz before feeding, with the Enjoye I am back to 6oz AFTER feeding.
My average freezing a day was between 7-10oz with 5 pumping sessions to get that much, yesterday I pumped 4 times and stored 17oz total. So yes, with this pump I have an amazing supply again. I will sing the praises of this pump for a very long time to come!
