The Business of Being Born

Has anyone watched this?  Every time I watch the trailer on iTunes I cry!  Whats up with that?  I had a great birth with DS but did get an epidural but don't feel bad about that but when I watch that trailer I get so emotional!  Has anyone seen this movie?  I heard it's very good.  To the mom who wrote about the planned c section post below - maybe this movie will help form your decision?

Either way, I want to rent it but I will be crying.  I'm a freaking basket case, I swear.

Re: The Business of Being Born

  • We loved it, although I'll be the first to admit that it's pretty one-sided.  DH found the history of childbirth in America particularly interesting and when he saw the women laboring in tubs he turned to me and said, "You should do that."  So we found it pretty inspirational!

  • I agree with the history of American childbirth. That part freaked me out. I work with an older woman and her stories scared me too. It's available on Netflix too and that's how I found it. The little cartoon about pitocin made me cry. That pretty much what happened with me that led to a c/s. Now I know, no pitocin!
  • I haven't seen it and I go back and forth on if I want to or not.

  • I saw it and I liked it, but you have to take it for what it is.

I agree that it was very one-sided and not all women are meant to do non-medicated home births but I found it to be informative at the same time since I didn't know much about home birthing options.

  • I love it, and I'd really recommend it.

It is in fact one sided, and every birth is different. But I also believe that a LOT more women are capable of doing natural home births, especially if they educate themselves to all their options.

I'm having a midwife assisted home birth, given that everything progresses as a low risk pregnancy.

  • I watched it and it definitely made me a lot more open-minded about home births. It is extremely one sided, but there is a lot of useful info too. Unfortunately in my area there's not many midwives, and I don't think there are any that do home births which limits my options a bit.

  • I really loved it!! I think everyone who is pg or thinking of becoming pg should watch it.  It just gives you a lot to think about no matter which route you choose!
  • I liked it but agree that it is extremely one sided.  We discussed it, and while it would be nice, we have the same problem of no one doing home births.

  • I watched it last week with DH. It's very good for a few reasons--

It has images from a lot of natural, normal births and it's awesome to see births that are calmer and way less scary than what you see on TV. I think it helped both DH and I relax about what birth entails.

And this is sort of related--but as DH just said to me, the nice doctors and midwives in the movie really explain just how baby naturally wants to get out of mom--the process of laboring, the way the baby turns to get out...it's great information and so reassuring to hear things *normally* and successfully occur without a doctor's help.

Finally, the history of medical birth in America and the numerous interventions that people regularly get that are often done are things everyone should know about in order to make informed decisions.

The movie is "slanted" because it's about the 90% of births that are low risk--where doctor-free birth is really an option. It's not about high risk birth. But the movie does give a glimpse of the other side--by showing the filmmaker's own experience with a complicated birth.

We really liked it. There are moments where a few experts say totally wacky or offensive things, but mostly it's a great documentary.

  • I really enjoyed this movie!  I was already leaning towards going the natural route before watching it, and am now pretty set on it.
