Planning a Cesarean

Good Morning Ladies,

I just got off the phone with my doctors office, and it has come to my attention that they do not do VBAC. So with this being said is that common not to be able to deliver or at least try to have a natural birth? I had a really hard recovery time dealing with a home health care nurse having to come to my house and change my padding. After my cesarean scar slip open 2 days after giving birth. I just cant imagine going threw that agian. Would you ladies look for another doctor? Or just deal with it. Thanks

Re: Planning a Cesarean

  • now I'm only newly pregnant and I've never given birth but for what its worth i would say that if its something you truly have your heart set on/want to try then find another doctor to accommodate your wishes. You don't want regrets when pregnant and you want flexibility. I mean, if you get to 8 months and say- I don't want a VBAC then okay too- but at least the opportunity is there.

  • My OB does do VBACs and encourages them, but I didn't opt for one.  My reason for a c/s the first time was likely to occur again (DS was stuck b/c my pelvis is small).  If I'd had one for a different reason, I might have considered a VBAC.  If you really would like to try for one and you're a good candidate, I would try to find another OB.

  • I have never heard of that! Are you sure they just won't do a VBAC because of your recent c-sec? I know that is still a common practice. I would definitely get another opinion and if the second ob says you would require a c-sec, then you'll feel better knowing you did your HW and if they say that you could have a vag birth, then you have to make the difficult decision about doctors... Good luck!!!

On another note, I definitely want a vaginal birth but if for some reason my doc says I need to schedule a c-sec, I may request May 1st (my EDD is 4/22). I just love the idea of a May 1st baby:)

  • What was your csec for originally? If it was for failure to progress, a lot of soca won't vbac because the chances of it happening again are high.

  • If VBAC is something you want to consider, look for another doctor.  Especially with the newest report (from the AMA, I think) out, many doctors are doing them, assuming you are a good candidate.

  • I think he was just ready to go home, had a bad attitude while I was trying to push.

  • If I were in your situation I would be looking for a new doctor. I don't think it's unreasonable at all to want a doctor who will offer you at least a shot at the VBAC that you have very good reasons for wanting.

Is this the same doc that delivered your first? If so, you have even more reason to look for someone new--it sounds like your first birth was less than ideal in a lot of ways.

  • I'd go to a new practice.  I had a VBAC with my DD & was so glad I did.  I'm hoping to have another one this time around too.  I'm all for trying to have a much quicker recovery time, especially now that I'll have 3 kids at home.
  • I can't help since I had a vag birth with DS but have you ever seen "The Business of Being Born" look it up in itunes or rent it.  It mostly about what your talking about - how c sections are very Dr friendly - it's a 20 minute surgury and they are home for dinner...kwim?  I do feel it's the easier thing to do for doctors and a good doctor wouldn't encourage a c section unless needed.  Check out that movie but it sounds to me that your heart is in the right place and I dont think you need a c section if it's not necessary.  I would do your research, check with other OB/midwives in your area and make a good informed decision that YOU are comfortable with.
  • If it were me, I would absolutely find another doctor.  I also had a c-section with my first, and the recovery was awful.  I cannot imagine doing that again with a newborn and a toddler.  Thankfully my OB is 100% onboard with me attempting a VBAC (without meds this time!), and I'm hoping its a success!  If you really have your heart set on a VBAC, I would switch.  Good luck...I know how hard that decision is to make!

  • If I was in your place there is no way I would return to that doctor.  If he truly just wanted to go home, sorry, no way would I find that acceptable.  That is NOT an medically indicated reason for a cesarean.

Also, the ACOG has changed their stance on repeat cesareans, stating VBAC is encouraged. I would find a doctor who wants to do what is best for the patient(s).

  • I also responded to this in first tri with the ACOG link as well. I would like to add that it's very sad that women don't know that a vbac is their choice and their dr should support them (there are exceptions for complications). Last September I joined another online forum that is pro vbac, but supportive if things don't work out for moms who are unable to have one. I have found so much information there and I was even able to find several vbac friendly doctors and midwifes in my area.
