Upstate NY Babies

new baby questions

I know I should know this stuff but with Ethan it was easy since he came home in February and it was freezing.

September is a weird weather month since it can be warm or cold.  If it's cold I know what to do.  Warm not so much.

Will she still wear a hat and socks if it is in the high 70's?  For winter babies it was 1 more layer than you have on.  What is the rule for fall babies and clothing?

I really feel dumb for not knowing this stuff.

Re: new baby questions

  • Don't feel dumb.  I STILL often wonder if I'm dressing Ryan in the right temp of clothing.  Especially at night.  Will he be too warm?  To cold?  Should I do this instead?  lol

Ryan was born in October and we just always kept enough clothes on him so that his back and belly felt warm. Which usually meant footie pj's.  And we learned the boy needed socks on his feet under his pj's in order to not cry during diaper changes.  lol

So I guess just play it by ear on how she feels based on the temp of the house, etc...?

  • Leah wore a hat last weekend because we were outside after dark and it was pretty cold. She wears socks to bed every night (if her outfit doesn't have feet) and if we are going somewhere with A/C. She just wore a sweater last week to something in A/C and I actually was complimented for dressing her properly for air conditioning haha!

Leah is still covered when she goes to bed at night - I love those really thin target sleep-n-plays with the feet...if it is colder than normal I may put a onesie under or pants over it.

So anyway - I think you should grab a little bit of everything. And don't worry - the newborn stuff comes back to you :)

  • Evan was a spring baby... the day we went to the hospital it was almost 80, and the day we brought him home it was in the low 60's and we had to turn the heat on in the house!

But, he always wore socks and hats when he was a newborn... even on warmer days. He lived in footed one-pieces those first few weeks.

  • I would do the hat and socks.  It's my understanding that a newborn's head is very sensitive and so any kind of air or wind can bother them.  And I just think they get colder more easily when they're so young.

  • Belle was born the beginning of October. She was in pants and long sleeves all the time. Or if she did have short sleeves she had a sweater over. The first couple of months she had poor circulation in her hands and feet. They were always cold. So we kept socks on her even with footed pjs. In the house we didn't have a hat on all the time, but if we left the house we would put a hat on. The nurse in the hospital said she only needed it on the first day, after that she didn't need a hat on. Not sure how true that really is.

I am always wondering if she is dressed right. Especially for bed time. I didn't put onsies on underneath until it started to get cooler, low 60's into the 50's. Then she had onsies on all winter until it warmed up in the spring.

  • DD was born late June and honestly, the only time she wore a hat was in the hospital and maybe a day or 2 here and there. She was usually in summer type clothes then swaddled so I guess we didn't see the need for it when it was so hot out. I know my cousin lives in FL and their pedi said no hats or swaddling b/c they didn't want the baby to overheat.
