Pre-pregnancy/Pregnancy Books?

Hi All,

I've posted on the DC Nest side a few times, but this is my first post here. So, hello!

DH and I are going to start TTC next spring, but I would like to do some reading/research in advance. Can any of you recommend some good pre-pregnancy/pregnancy books? Also, if you could tell me why you liked it (them), that would be great.

 TIA! Smile

  • I like the book "Taking Charge of your Fertility". I like it because it explains what's going on with your body and how to know when you are ovulating. I also like the website www.fertilityfriend.com. It is an online charting tool where you can log information to track your ovulation signs. You can also check out the Trying to Get Pregnant board on The Bump. They list a lot of good resources. Good luck!

  • Once you're pregnant, I would recommend "Great Expectations"--I really liked the format and the updates it gives for each week of your pregnancy, plus it includes some buying guides and general information for preparing for the baby and things to consider for those first few weeks/months. It's very straightfoward, with minimal fearmongering...something I think is pretty valuable when your body is going through the adventure that is pregnancy.

  • I have a fantastic recommendation for after birth: Natural Health After Birth by Aviva Jill Romm.  I'm about half way through and wish I had heard about it before my first birth.  It's all about keeping YOU healthy postpartum and how to help prevent such problems as PPD, breast-feeding issues, etc.

I'll also add that you should start reading child books (such as the Baby Book by Dr. Sears) while pregnant, too.  I focused so much on my pregnancy that I kind of forgot that I'd need to know stuff about the baby, too Smile.

But as for your actual question, I really enjoyed the Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy for the pull-no-punches look at what really goes on with your body.

  • I just finished Ina Mays Guide to Childbirth. I wish I read it for my first. It was an eye opener.

  • I second Taking Charge of Your Fertility - I really relied on this book.

I have been reading What to Expect When You're Expecting for the pregnancy and think it's helpful. I've found that I tend to go to the web first for answers, though, so I have spent a lot of time on babycenter.com and the bump, and from there have gone to sites and blogs about breastfeeding and cloth diapering, etc. for more detail.

I am about ready to start stocking up on baby books, though, so I'm taking notes from other responses.

  • I recently ordered "Get Ready to Get Pregnant" by Michael C. Lu since we plan to start TTC next spring/summer.  Haven't read it yet so I don't have any reviews though.

  • I've been reading From the Hips by Rebecca Odes & Ceridwen Morris. I was looking for a book that was a bit tongue-in-cheek and VERY honest, and this one really appealed to my third-wave feminist side. It provides a lot of different perspectives on issues surrounding pregnancy, birth, and having a child in your life--from the choice to deliver naturally to medicated, from having a midwife to a doctor, from breastfeeding to formula feeding. I don't feel like it's biased in any one direction. I feel like a girlfriend is giving me advice, and it's pretty much exactly what I needed.
