Daycare charges for partial days?

Hi

We plan on utilzing my mother in law to watch our baby once I go back to work in January, however she volunteers twice a week on Weds and Thurs so we would need a daycare for those two days from 8-12:30.

I am going to start calling around but I wasn't sure if anyone knew how the day cares would charge for this?

My friend recently told me they would charge me a full month price for that because of the ratio of babies to workers. And my baby would be taking up a full time spot basically because they couldn't allow another full time baby to come in.

Now I know that is how her day care is but I was really hoping they weren't all like that! But I can understand why they would charge full price. But it's hard for me to wrap my head around paying $1000 a month or so just for two half days a week.

And does anyone have any suggestions to alternative options?

Re: Daycare charges for partial days?

  • I think if the daycare doesn't offer Mothers Day Out, then yes...you're probably stuck paying for the entire month.  However, there are plenty of daycares that offer MDO programs where you pay for M/W/F or T/Th, and it's pretty cheap (like $300/month).  Only problem would be the early morning drop off time, as I belive most MDO programs start at 9AM.  But again, there are plenty of daycares that offer early morning/late afternoon (extended) care for an additional cost.  I would start with church-based programs, as most (if not all) churches offer MDO programs.

Also -- there are "drop in" daycares that might allow you to just drop your child off two days a week for a reasonable cost.

  • Are you looking for something in the Spring area?  If so, send me zip codes.  It's slow at work.  I'll help you research. Wink
  • I'd also look at in-home daycares or babysitters, in my experience, finding part time care for an infant is tough.    Especially given that you are wanting W/Th and shorter hours.

  • Here is one option: https://www.sw-umc.org/preschool_tuition.html

It's Spring Woods UMC.  They have a 2-day MDO program on T/Th, but I am wondering if they'd let you do W/Th instead??  2 day program is $288/month.

Another thought - you could check out a website like www.care.com and maybe just hire a sitter for 2 days a week?

    I will keep looking.
