So DS has always have a painful latch initially while BFing. For the first week when I brought it up to the LC I saw she said it was likely due to me getting used to it. It wasn't totally intolerable and it only lasted for 30 seconds.. It has continued into almost week 4 now and it is VERY painful but still only for 30 seconds.. then I have no pain at all. Is it just because DS is so hungry he is latching hard and then slowing down or is this normal?
Re: Initial painful latch
I asked my MIL about this exact same thing last night since she BF all 5 of her kids and her response was " Welcome to motherhood" haha
She recommended washing the nipple with warm water and putting cocoa butter on it after each feeding and washing it off before you feed again.
It sounds like it's the thing where your nerves in your nipples spasm initially for a few to several seconds. It's normal and I imagine it will go away within a few more weeks. For me, just knowing it was normal and would feel fine in mere seconds was enough to help me feel better about it. I found that taking deep breaths helped me to try to relax during that part.
Hopefully you'll soon be on to the "oh, this is what they meant by it actually starts to feel GOOD" phase! For me that was at about 6 weeks.
