Television and babies

What are your rules on the tv around your LO? DH always has the TV on and it drives me nuts. C started zoning out at the TV the other night at a friends house, and while everyone else thought it was so cute, I did not like it one bit. I know he is still so young but there are some interesting links to ADD and such in children as they get older so I'm curious of how others deal with the TV issue, and what they think about it's affects on LOs

Re: Television and babies

  • I am completely against the TV (that is at this stage now.....I'm sure I'll change my mind later on when that's the only thing that may occupy her & allow me to get stuff done).  DH watches it w/ her but I try not to complain if that's how he chooses to spend his time w/ her, etc.  I, on the other hand, will not watch it when we are together all day long.  My TV watching is after I've put her to bed for the night-all 1-1 1/2 hours if I even last that long.

  • I don't agree with setting a baby/toddler down in front of the TV with that intention (ie. buying them videos to watch). We don't have the TV on very often when Alexa is awake, but when do she doesn't pay any attention to it.

  • I am anti tv for babies, although it is often on but just for background noise with me. DH is really bad about holding her and watching tv, completely ignoring her. It makes me very sad.
  • Well I am the opposite....my TV is on all the time for background noise....G really does not pay any attention to it at all though which is good...However she does watch a 20 min Baby Einstein video before bed after her bath and she absolutely loves it.

I think if you leave a child in front of the TV all day watching videos etc rather than interacting with them etc than that is bad.....but I feel there is nothing wrong with some sort of educational video every now and again especially when you are interacting with the baby all day long....

Many of my friends has done this and all of their children are extremely bright and have no signs of ADD etc...
