Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Help! She HATES milk.

I cannot get DD to drink milk.  I've tried mixing it with formula, I've tried chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, and coconut.  She hates them all.  I have to wean her, not only because I'm ready, but because I'm getting Lasik, and I have to get it by the end of the year (we're using our FSA for it) and they won't do it if you are breastfeeding.  We are down to BF just morning and night, and tonight was the first time I didn't nurse her at night, it didn't go too well, but wasn't a total fail.  Also, we are going to start TTC again hopefully in a couple months and I'd love to have my body back even if for a very short time.

I can't pump anything anymore.  I'm lucky if I get an ounce, so mixing milk with BM isn't an option either.

Does anyone have any other ideas?  I've been giving her other forms of calcium, yogurt, cheese etc... to make up for her not drinking milk, but I really want her to learn to like milk.

  • As nasty as it sounds, DS started drinking milk when I mixed it with apple juice. Then I slowly upped the ratio of milk and decreased the juice. Now he LOVES his milk cup!

  • Have you tried serving it warmed?  I would just keep trying.  What is the saying...a child has to try something 21 times before they like it??  Something like that.   GL
  • It took my older daughter a really long time to like milk, but once she had time to adjust to the taste she got used to it and started drinking enough.  My ped said that as long as she had cheese and yogurt and kept hydrated the milk itself was less critical.

  • I know what you mean about wanting your LO to like plain milk. My friend just went through this with her DD. While she still just doesn't like milk, she LOVES smoothies with just milk and fruit blended together.

Yeah, that does sound nasty, but I'm willing to try anything!  I have tried it warmed, that was a no go too.  I've also tried the smoothie thing with blueberries.  She wasn't a fan, however, she LOVES mango and strawberries, so maybe I'll try those next.  I'm not too worried, as I know she's getting calcium in other forms, but it'd be soooo much easier for her to like milk!  Thanks for all the ideas.

  • Well, I guess I'm no help because my DS hates milk too. I don't really care. He gets enough calcium from yogurt, cheese, etc, so I don't need him to drink milk. Have you tried offering smoothies? That's pretty much the only way my DS will drink it; blended with bananas.
  • Cow's milk is not necessary. DD hated it, so I stopped trying. Turns out she is lactose intolerant, something I didn't find out until months after I gave up on the milk. I just make sure she eats lots of other calcium-rich foods and she has been fine. You could also try yogurt drinks, smoothies, goat's milk or hemp milk.

  • I had to stop BF just before ds was 17 mo. I still can't get him to drink milk and I tried everything, even mixing in juice. Every so often I can get him to drink a few sips of 1% mllk but that's it. We just make sure he gets his calcium from other foods such as yogurt.
  • My DD doesn't like milk either.  Our pediatrician said to offer it to her at every meal, but it's not big deal if she doesn't drink milk as long as she's eating other dairy products throughout the day.  I make sure she has yogurt twice a day and cheeses twice a day.  DD's drink of choice is water - she doesn't even like juice.  She's not weaned completely yet either.  We've been replacing BF with small snacks.  She does like have yogurt before bed - which has taken the place of BF before bed.  I used to worry about it, but I'm ok with it now.  My mom said that I didn't like milk when I was younger - I still don't.  Good Luck!
  • My DS wouldn't drink his milk either.  We started to water it down (1oz milk, 7oz water to start) and gradually increased the amount of milk.  So far we are about 50/50 milk/water.  Next week I'm going to try 3/4 milk, 1/4 water. Hopefully we'll be on all milk (except for am and pm breastfeeding).
