Physicians for Women

Has anyone had any experience with Physicians for Women on Kenmore in Alexandria?  While I'm currently not TTC I would like to establish a relationship with an ob/gyn close to home rather than work for when I will hopefully be pregnant.

Also, I've noticed they deliver at INOVA Alexandria.  Any reviews on that hospital?

TIA!

Re: Physicians for Women

  • I went to them last year for sort of the same reason as you - I just went for my annual, but also to check them out for when we start TTC. Rather than type it all out again, here is my Yelp review:

I visited Dr. Hibshman for an annual exam, but I also had the ulterior motive of checking the practice out for when my husband and I decide to start trying.

I can't relate to one of the previous reviewers who said that Dr. Hibshman actually talks to her and doesn't rush - I have never felt MORE rushed by a doctor in my life. I would be surprised if the total time she was in the room exceeded 3 minutes. There were several issues I wanted to discuss, but I didn't bring them up because the whole thing was such a whirlwind. While you could say that this is my fault because she did technically ask if I had any questions, she asked it in such a passing, cursory way that it did not open the door to conversation about anything.

If you truly just want a bare bones exam, or at the other end of the spectrum if you're pregnant, this doctor might be ok. She seemed nice. But if you want to discuss anything at all and feel like you're being listened to and taken seriously, I don't recommend seeing this doctor. I realize that pregnant women are these kinds of practices' bread and butter, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out from my chart that I am married and entering my late 20s - investing in winning my loyalty now could definitely pay dividends later. I want a doctor who's more interested in my health, so the search continues.

  • In my experience, the gyn exams are short.  Personally, I liked that b/c it was the most hated time of the year for me and I just wanted to get out of there asap.  My dr did ask (on my first appt after I was married) if I was thinking about TTC.

However, when I was pg and went in for myconfirmation appt, and all my appts thereafter, each dr took the time to explain things to me - I also had a notepad (yes, I'm a geek! but I can't remember anything unless I write it down) with all my questions out so they could see it.   I saw all the drs during my pregnancy, and I liked them all, including Dr Hibshman.

Well, that review was about my exam this past January, so I guess I am still on the hunt for somone for next time around. It's more serious now because we are closer to TTC. I am planning on doing the research all over again this fall because I might also be switching insurance plans. I wish I had a great rec, but I don't.

And I agree with PP, I appreciate the actual exam part of the visit being as brief as possible - I just didn't find the door to be open to a conversation about any concerns, etc.

  • Oh, I should note, though, that my friend delivered at Inova Alex last year and loved the hospital. Since I know you might ask, she used Physicians and Midwives, but she found them to be just ok. Some of the providers were great, and others were terrible.

  • Thanks for the info.  I think I may try Health for Women.  I like my GP well enough and even though I've only met him twice I called his office and asked who he recommends and they suggested that practice.  There are a couple of doctors that looked great but they were all in DC by GW and that seems a bit far to go from the Shirlington area.  Sigh.

  • I used them and LOVED them.  I had a lot of issues with my pregnancy (I was high risk for several reasons, I had either food poisoning or a stomach virus at one point and was hosptialized for observation, then I had spotting and was on bed rest, THEN I had preterm contractions, on bed rest and in and out of L&D, hospitalized, etc. for three weeks at the end.  The whole gamut.  They were sensitive, knowledgeable, supportive during my MANY late night pages/calls, and consulted with the perinatologist.

I felt like I got to know them all and in the end Dr. Seigal delivered my baby.  I really feel like they helped to keep me cooking my baby longer so he wasn't born even earlier (he was born at 34w5d gestation and since I received a steroid shot for his lung development at precisely the optimum time, he didn't even spend any time in the NICU - he was tiny but very healthy).

I use healthcare for women & delivered with them at VHC.

I really like most of the doctors (one is nice enough, but I preferred the other 6 or whatever drs I saw).  Dr. McClendon is my usual doctor there & Dr. Paik delivered my baby.  I remember at my first (non-preg) appt, Dr. McClendon definitely didn't rush me & we discussed what I should be doing to prepare for pregnancy.

The only downsides of the practice for me are: Paying for parking ($4. Not a big deal for annual gyno visits, but those weekly baby visits, it adds up!) & that occasionally I'd have to wait awhile for my appt.

And, I *really* liked VHC.  The facility has been redone recently and the nurses (both l&d & pp) were really nice/helpful.  I even liked the LC which most ppl seem to not like at VHC.

  • Great, thank you so much - that's really helpful.

  • I've been with the practice for a year and haven't had any issues. They took me through my m/c and D&C at INOVA and are very good at calling me back. With each OB check up, the doctors always go through my list of questions of spend as much time as I need answering them. They are also good about getting you in asap if needed. They were proactive with this pg in giving me progesterone supplements and putting me on baby aspirin just in case my last pg ended due to those reasons. Also, when I had my m/c and just wanted it to be over, I was able to get the D&C the morning after we found out the baby had died, which I really appreciated.

The one thing I didn't like was when I was in the process of m/c I felt like leading up to it I was passed off to the u/s place to just keep following the pg until it ended, with not much communication, though I now understand that they were in the same limbo I was, just waiting and there was nothing anyone could do during that time except wait to see if the baby's h/b stopped or picked up.
