nurse in

looking to organize a nurse in at SouthWest community Center pool (in multnomah village) next tuesday the 17th during their open swim (1-4) if you can join please do!

i was there today with my 22mo old, and he was being extra grumpy-he normally only nurses 3xs a day-1st thing in the am, before nap and before bed-but today he needed it to help center himself so i got out of the pool and started to nurse him, a lifeguard came over and asked me to stop or cover up, even after i informed her that this was illegeal of her to ask, she still insisted...so im now motivated to inform the heck out of them...hence the nurse in!

Re: nurse in

  • IMHO it would be a better use of your time and MUCH less passive aggressive to contact the center's management and file a complaint.

  • I agree with Jenn.. It might better to let the center know how you were treated and by whom that way their behavior can be corrected.  The person that asked you to stop probably wasn't trying to piss you off or offend you, they were probably trying to keep you from feeling embarrassed should anyone else be embarrassed, etc.. Not a lot of child-less people understand the legalities around BF'ing in public.

  • i did contact the manager of the pool and talk to him about it, as well as i wrote a letter and have a bunch of others writing letters as well...i contacted DHS who will also send a letter and possibly a rep out to inform them of the law...this being said i dont want the pool employees to just brush it off as nothing big...i will be at the pool on tuesday anyway to work with a little girl i know, and while there i will have my son and will nurse him...like i said, im just motivated to inform them--the lifegurard was rude to me and broke the law even after i informed her that was what she was doing...
  • Oh geez... you obviously have a lot of extra time on your hands. Like Joleine mentioned, most childless people have no idea of the laws regarding breastfeeding. It's also a touchy subject as I am sure you are very aware of. I would say MOST folks I know would rather a nursing mom would try and cover up. I only mention that because as a lifeguard she may have been (while misinformed of the laws) trying to "protect" others.

I still believe that a "nurse in" is a waste of time, but whatever makes you feel better. I think the whole list of letters and phone calls you made are quite sufficient.

Just remember, they asked you to cover up... not to stop.

  • its still illegeal to ask someone to cover up...and even after i informed her of the law she still insisted that i cover up, stop or leave...so whatever...you dont have to agree, dont join...were going swimming anyway might as well make it a teaching oppertunity while there
