I'm really about to cry right now

I just spoke to DH and he said he thinks DD said her first word...."eyes". He's not sure if it was just a sound or if she's saying the actualy word at this point, but she did repeat it. He's home on summer vacation - he's a teacher.

I am honestly so glad that one of us gets to witness this, I'm just so sad that it's not me. Crying

I knew this was a big possibility being a working mom, but it upsets me just the same.

Did anyone else experience this?

  • It is hard to miss the firsts.  I have heard good advice from other moms that your child hasn't really done something until you see it for yourself.  Hopefully she'll do the same for you tonight.  Hang in there.

  • I've come to realize that most of the "firsts" aren't really discrete moments in time. For example, I doubt that's the first time your LO has made the sound "eyes." They babble sounds for a while and then attach meaning and purpose. Their first word is the first time we *realize* they've attached meaning and purpose to the word, but it is undoubtedly not the first time they meant it. Once I realized all of that, I felt much better about not being there for every new sound.
  • You both have a point, I never thought about it like that. That does make me feel better.

Still cried though. LOL  I couldn't help it.

  • This is why I secretly hope that our dcps forgets to tell us if DD says her first word at daycare.  I'm perfectly okay with thinking that the first time she talks at home is her first words ever.  Stick out tongue

  • SAHMs miss firsts, too.  I know several who were out running errands or out to lunch on the weekend when their child did a "first" for their husband, mother, MIL, babysitter, etc.

And I agree with the pp, in that there are few very discrete firsts.  Most new things are a gradually process of improvement and there is a moment when we see or hear something new for the first time.

And the first time that *you* see or hear your child do something is the truly special moment.   Try not to dwell on it.  For all you know, you could be the one who hears her next five words.  :-)

For crawling, walking, an some words, my DCP didn't tell me.  Rather, she said "oh he is saving it for mommy".  It makes me feel like a million bucks, and I really think they are told to tell us working parents that!!!
