FFFC: Baby name remorse

I'll probably get flamed for admitting this but I'm having second thoughts on my baby's name. We didn't name her anything funky. Her name is Claire. I'm just not sure it fits her.?

We had a hard time deciding on a name. We basically had to put something down so they would let us leave the hospital. We liked the name Olivia but I had concerns about it being too popular. ( I grew up with a common 1970s name and there were eight girls in my senior class with the same name) We also like Sophie but my husband was concerned about how it would age.?

In the end we chose Claire because it sounded good with our last name and seemed liked a solid classic name. ?But three months on, it just doesn't seem to suit her. Part of me would like to take one of the two names we loved and and add it to her name so she would be Olivia Claire or Sophie Claire, but my husband won't even discuss it.?

Anyone else have second thoughts about a name? And for heaven's sake if you love the name Claire, please tell me so maybe I can feel better.?

Re: FFFC: Baby name remorse

  • we didn't decide on a name for DS1 until we were in the hospital...it changed that much. I love all those names - especially Claire which would have been our baby's name if we had a girl.

p.s. I never have loved the name Robert and thought it'd grow on me. It hasn't.  (3rd edit to this post) but, I do love the nicknames "Robert" has spawned.

  • I love the name Claire!  It's simple and classic!

We were between Charlotte and Margaux, and went Margaux because it's got medieval roots.  I am still torn about the spelling.  My husband insists it's an ancient one, but I am getting tired of people mispronouncing it already.

What is her middle name?  My little sister Emily went by "Chrissy" until she was an adult, because Emily just didn't fit her.  She loves it now, though.

You could also go with a nickname, like maybe Cici or claire-bear.  I was known as "La" when I was tiny, short for "Ame-la-la" which was from "Amy."

Don't worry, a Claire by any other name would be as sweet!

  • Thanks Mama bear. I keep try to change that to a birthday ticker, but it keeps coming back as a pregnancy one. Maybe I'm as bad as Bumping as I am at naming babies.?
  • We gave DD a name with a Gaelic spelling that has doomed her to a life of mispronunciations and misspellings. I have moments here and there where I wonder what we did to her. But it sounds SO pretty.

DH gave her a girl's name as a nickname and part of me occasionally wants to use it in her name. Oh well.

I like Claire. I'm sure it will be fine.

  • Thanks everyone. It doesn't help that her uncle keeps repeated 'Claire is a fat girl's name" '80s reference I think this board will appreciate.?

Her middle name is my maiden name. It is sometimes used as a first name, but I don't think it will work.?

I love the name Margaux and the spelling!

I think I just have new Mom disease. I want everything to be perfect. I wish there were answers in the back of the book. This is the right name. This the right day care etc. ?

  • First I really like Claire it's classic and beautiful.  That said don't feel bad about second guessing your choice.  I can't remember if you mentioned what her middle is.  What about using that as a first name in her day to day life. Or initials of her first and middle name?  If I had to do it again I would have spelled "Vivian" the french spelling "Vivianne".....

Yeah, you're just going to drive yourself crazy trying to make it all perfect. She has a very nice name that the average person will never criticize you for (ignore the crazy uncle). She'll go to a lovely daycare with likely a minimum of problems, if any. At some point she'll roll or crawl into a spot that makes her cry, or she'll spit up on her cute outfit, or she'll have a meltdown in a restaurant because she missed her afternoon nap. And it will all be OK.

  • Totally get what you're saying.  Naming is so hard!!!  But I've got to tell you, I love the name Claire!  When I had DD, we couldn't decide between Claire Jillian or Jillian Claire, so we let DS chose; he went with Jillian Claire. I was happy with either one.

With DS #1, we, ok I, had a really hard time committing to a name.  We had chosen Shaun, but by the time he came, I was so sick of it. It didn't help he was 10 days late, and I was bitter about everything.   When he came out with red hair, I knew he'd have to be a Shaun.  I do wish we spelt his with the more traditional Sean.  We still get stuff, and some of it from family, spelt wrong.  You think after 15 years they could learn how to spell his name!  But he doesn't mind.

  • I absolutely ADORE the name Claire!  I was going to use it as a middle name had I had a girl.  :)  Of course, I am one of those LOST fans who loved the Claire character on the show.

I like all the Irish names too and would have been very tempted to Do the same as Dr.Loretta.  I chose Liam and for some reason people STILL don't pronounce it correctly.

  • LOL!  Yep, know what you mean.  For months I kept looking at DS wondering if we should change his name.  Like you, it was a name we both liked but weren't in love with.  We had a very hard time finding a common ground for a boy's name.  But I figure somehow, the name chose DS and that he has the name he was meant to have.  What is really strange and I had forgotten is that it turns out the name we chose is actually an old family name on my dad's side.  So definitely seemed meant to be.

You'll always second-guess yourself so just stop. Claire is a lovely and classic name (always makes me think of Claire Huxtable -- not such a bad image for a girl!) and she is named that for a reason.  She'll grow into it!

  • Claire was one of our top 3 choices for a girl when I was pregnant with DD and if we'd had a girl this time it was DH's number 1 and probably 1 or 2 for me.  I think it is a classy name that ages very well and won't sound too trendy later.  I think the longer you have that sweet little girl there with you the more she will grow into her name until one day you won't be able to imagine her as anything else!

Hahahahaha... I love Breakfast Club references!

  • I love the name Claire. It's classy, sophisticated and sweet. We went with it for Fiona's middle name (husban'ds pick) but spelled Clare. I told my husband it's such a great name maybe we should've put it in reserve for if we have another girl.

Fiona was my #1 choice for years. I actually think it suits my daughter well...and I get so many compliments on the name..no regrets.
  • The Breakfast Club is one of my top three fave movies of all time; therefore ANYTHING related kicks ass. ; )

Seriously, I really love the name Claire. I like Olivia and Sophie a lot, too, but I like Claire better for the simple reason it's not in the top 10.

I always said if I had a daughter her name would be Isabella bc I think it's an incredibly beautiful name, but its insane popularity drove me far away from that name... but, I have, on occasion, called my sweet baby doll Bella (means beautiful in Italian)- though I have no regrets with her real name which suits her nicely, I think. Maybe you could call Claire by a nickname like others suggested?

  • I like the name Claire. I think it's pretty and not too common but not too unusual. It's a good name.

And I also love The Breakfast Club. I never thought of Claire being a "fat" girl's name. I think it's a pretty girl's name. The Molly Ringwald character was "the princess" and was popular.

I wish I had a way to make you feel better. I hope you do.

  • I like the name Sophia. It's timeless and I know people from all generations who have it. Sophie Claire is my favorite. Honestly, if you don't like her name, you can still redo all the paperwork and rename her. It will be harder later on when more stuff has her name on it. Follow your gut!!

  • I think second guessing your child's name is pretty normal.  With my DD, Abigail (Abby), my DH picked her name and it took a while to grow on me but as she's gotten older and its grown with her personality, and it really fits now.  I picked DS's name (Andrew) and I still think and say, "Andrew doesn't quite fit still, maybe we should call him Alex" or whatever other name I am thinking of at the moment.  I figure it will pass and his name will start to seem right eventually.
  • I totally understand about wanting everything to be perfect.  Trust me when you resolve the name issue it will be something else you obsess over - at least that is the way it is with me!

I really like Claire. It is beautiful and classy. A woman named Claire sounds like she can be president someday.

This - why it's a classic name, it just has a certain authority and yet fun to it!  And if you really are doubting, a woman in my breast feeding group decided at 4 months to change her DD's name, but had been pretty tortured over it for 2-3 months.  She's happyshe did it, even though it sounded like the paper work was a PITA.

And who are these people that can't pronounce Liam and Margaux?!

  • I love the name Claire! I am listening to an audiobook right now where the main character's name is Claire and I was thinking I'd consider it for our #2. It's a classic beautiful name.

  • Yes we've had second thoughts about DS's name since our 8 year old dog has the same name!  We love his name and didn't think it would be a problem to give the baby the same name as a dog who won't live more than another few years.  But we hardly ever call DS by his name because we don't want to confuse our dog!  So we call him "little man" or "baby" when we talk about him to each other, and we only use his name when we talk to him directly.  Pretty bad huh?

  • I too love the name Claire! Plus I love the breakfast club and as Robyn said "Claire" was the princess.
  • Now we've confused you more, eh? It took me a couple months to get used to the name Adrian but it fits LO really well now. I also liked Alejandro but my cousin's son already has that name, as well as my other cousin. And it's too long.

  • Thanks everyone. I really, really appreciate the support and the thoughts that maybe I'm not completely crazy for second guessing myself. Her name will stay Claire. You reminded me of the reasons we picked it.(Aside from desperation and being stalked by the birth certificate lady) It's classic without being super common and should age well.

It's funny that someone said the president thing, cause when we were discussing names we'd ask ?which of these sentences did a name sound like it would fit better in.?

"Ladies and gentlemen, the next president of the United States......."

    or

"Now on center stage, The Lusty Beaver is proud to present......." ?

    ?

    ?

    ?

I know, right?  That's confusing to me.  I guess they are the same people who think that Keira spells Kee-ah-rah -- and there are a LOT of them.  I would have at least thought that Keira Knightley would have saved us from that, but no.

Anyway, back to the subject at hand -- I LOVE the name Claire.  It is a beautiful, classic name, as everyone has said.  When you hear the name Claire, you expect to meet someone who is smart, pretty, fun but also a little refined too.  It's really a great name.
