Anyone's C-Section get infected?

So I am going to the doctor today, it seems that I have an infection in my incision...and stupid me, I waited till Monday to call when I was pretty sure it was infected on Saturday. Anyways, anyone else get an infection there? Did it have to be opened and packed? If so, how much did it hurt?

Re: Anyone's C-Section get infected?

  • Neither of my c-section incisions got infected, but just wanted to say good luck. I couldn't imagine it getting infected. Did they send home any antibacterial soap with you to clean it with?

  • nothing. they told me only to rinse it and get no soap into it.
  • Yes this happened to me. I won't sugarcoat my experience: It has been a nightmare.

If you are lucky they will not need to reopen it and can just give you antibiotics to clear things up. That would be the ideal outcome for you.

My doc had me admitted to the hospital for IV antibiotics for what she thought might be a day or two and I ended up in there for a week. My wound was reopened and cleaned/repacked twice a day, and it was the worst pain of my life, even with morphine. I hope you're not as far gone as I was and don't have to go through this, but if you do, insist on adequate pain control!

Good luck, and be glad you're getting it taken care of!

holy crap i hope that don't happen to me! I BF exclusively and that would screw that all up!!

  • Yeah my c-section got infected about two weeks after. I too waited to call the doc until it was really painful. My husband helped me through it. They didn't have to reopen the incision but I did have to clean it every day with a solution of half hydrogen peroxicide and water. It was really gross and uncomfortable! I hope your infection isn't too bad. Good luck!

They sent me home with some antiseptic scrub. Chlorohexidine gluconate 4%. It's the same stuff I had to wash my belly with before I went into surgery. Hopefully it's something some oral antibiotics can clear up!!

same here and it was not fun

  • Mine got infected maybe a week after. I was supposed to wash it with regular soap and blow dry the incision area afterwards. I got a ten day script for keflex and it got better a few days after I was done with the meds.

I didn't mean to scare you, just to share my experience. No matter what, it need NOT screw up your BFing. I have been giving my son BM exclusively since he was born even though he spent three weeks in the NICU and I spent a week back in the hospital myself. Every med they gave me they made sure was safe for BFing. If you need a pump, rent one, and use it. Now my son is home and he BFs great.

  • Both my c-sections ended with infections.  The first time I had a lot of problems and was on antibiotics for weeks.  I couldn't breast feed as a result but I felt fine the entire time despite the infection.  The antibiotics worke- it just took time.

This time I got an infection again but I was determined to pump and dump while on the antibiotics so I could continue BF after I was done with the antibiotics.  It took one week on the antibiotics - I asked for one that I coudl BF on but I needed something stronger to kill the infection so I listened to my doctor and took what he wanted.  The pumping would have worked - if I did it enough.  My supply dried up and I gave up - but that was more me - and being exhausted.

Neither time did I have to have the incision opened - I think that would be a last resort to most doctors and I"m sorry to hear that poster had to go through it - it sounds horrible!
