? for working/pumping moms who have weaned

Can you tell me your process and how long it took to be completely done?

I have always BF on demand and used to pump 3x a day (9:30, 1 and 4).  I have already cut out one pumping session so the schedule now looks like this:

BF on demand up until 7am, pump at 10 and 2, BF on demand in evening (DS often doesn't nurse though if he just had a bottle at daycare and he eats his dinner around 5:30), nurse a bit to bed at 7pm and also give bottle of formula, pump before I go to bed at 9pm.

He does not sleep thru the night so I'm up around 1 am and 4:30 nursing.  I'm guessing the next step is to get to the one pumping session while at work around noon?

  • That is pretty much how I did it... I stayed at 1 pumping session per day at work until I wasn't feeling engorged (didn't take long at all) and then I cut it out. It worked well. I don't know if you are going to wean at home as well, but after I had cut out all my work pumping sessions, I kept the wake up and bedtime nursing sessions, but slowly cut out the overnights. In your case, I would give him a bottle instead of nursing at 1 am. You could pump right before bed for comfort so that you can get through to the 4 am nursing session. Then eventually do the same for the 4 am one. The wake up/bed time sessions were the ones I wanted to keep indefinitely, so I didn't work to wean those... but within a few weeks of just 2 sessions a day, my milk dried up. If you are worried about this happening, I would recommend pumping after any sessions that you want to keep if you are cutting down to say, 2 per day. Just some of my experience! Good luck!!

  • I started cutting out all day time pumping sessions but kept nursing morning and night and pumping before I went to bed.  Then I dropped the night pumping.  I am now only nursing morning and night.  When I am ready, I will drop the morning nursing and then eventually the night nursing also.  It has not been hard for me to drop any of the sessions but I have only been dropping one at a time.

I spent about 2 weeks dropping pumps and/or getting more time between them. Once I was at about 2-3 a day I stopped cold turkey. Over about 3 days I only pumped when I HAD to. Pretty uncomfortable for a couple days. Not too bad though!
