Anyone done the whole allergist thing with LO?

DD has had a skin reaction to peanuts, twice. The redness (mostly on her chin) went away within a half hour and she acted fine through the whole thing but pedi still recommends I take her to an allergist. I of course want to know if she has a sensitivity to peanuts but I am also really nervous. Anyone have experience with this and the possible tests they will do?? She is almost 14 months.

  • Yes---he had severe reactions to many things, including formula/milk so we had to get tested.  They just did the RAST testing which is a blood draw---no big deal.  I wouldn't put them through skin pricks at that age.

  • We did blood testing around 7 months due to chronic hives.  DS didn't end up being allergic to anything we tested for (they think he just gets them when his immune system is fighting something).

I imagine that they'd do blood testing for peanuts and not a skin test since peanut allergies can be so dangerous.  The blood draw was really no big deal.  It didn't take long and DS stopped crying as soon as I picked him up.

  • I love our allergist. As far as I am convinced, she is close to a miracle worker. DD had a rash and was spitting up/screaming from the time she was born. The allergist did a skin patch test where they just put the drops of different allergens on your LO's back. She said she doesn't like to do prick tests on infants. DD's patch test came back positive for dairy allergy. Even since we made the switch to a different formula nd avoid dairy, DD is such a happier baby! No more screaming and spitting up and her skin is totally clear. GL and I hope you get some answers!

  • Will has had allergy testing done at 10m and 15m and Alex at 15m. It was all skin tests except Will had a follow-up blood test at 15m (peanut allergy). For my boys the skin test was much easier than the blood draw. The only hard part is keeping them positioned so nothing touches their back while waiting for the test to be read.

We had this done at about 19 months.... she was getting hives on and off for 2 months and like PP I think she gets them when she gets a cold or sick. We haven't done a blod test yet, but I think that is next.
