Natural Birth

So disappointed....VENT

I just got my GBS culture, and I'm positive.  Grr.  That was one of the worst parts of DS#1's birth experience, being hooked up the whole time.

Thankfully I preemptively talked to my MW about it, and she's going to let me go to the hospital when I start labor for round one of the antibiotics, then I can get round 2 when I actually go in, so less hospital time required....but still, stupid IV hooked up while I'm there.  Grr.  I don't think my hospital offers a Hep Lock, but I'm going to ask my friend about it....her mom is an OB nurse there...and she's been GBS 2x now.  She would know.

  • Ugh, that sucks!  Can you try the garlic clove in the vag this week and see if they will retest you?  Or can they take the IV out when you're done with the antibiotics?

  • didn' t aprilcachet's midwife give her ABs around 35 weeks to treat for GBS? pretty sure she was GBS+ around 35 weeks, took the ABs then and was GBS- before she went into labor. ask your MW about the possibility of doing that. i never knew this was even possible before aprilcachet's story, and i now wonder why they would make anyone wait until labor to do the ABs

ETA: i asked my MW about it and she said it is current CDC guidelines that the IV be given during labor. prelabor ABs might be prescribed if mom was transient for GBS in the first place. you might also ask for a 2nd test as you get closer to your EDD, especially if you haven't presented any of the risk factors and since you can test positive one day and negative another (and vice versa). but, if you've had UTIs or yeast or any other type of infection, then your gut floras might really be infected.

  • I've heard about folks taking an oral antibiotic up until delivery so that they only had to have one bag of IV at the hospital which minimized the time they were on an IV.

No matter how they do it make sure you are eating your yogurt no need get a yest infection during all this.

    Best of luck!

  • That does suck! I would imagine that a hep/saline lock is just a standard thing that hospitals can do, especially on request? Definitely worth asking about.

  • My mws just put in a butterfly needle, squeeze in the bag of antibiotics and then take the needle out again.  And they don't require going in to the hospital before you'd need to actually be there for delivery.  But they also don't deliver in a hospital, so maybe that makes a difference.
  • I had a home birth but i tested positive for this also.. My midwife gave me antibiotics by mouth the minute I started labor.. (I see an OB and a midwife) and my OB was totally fine with her administering the antibiotics at home by mouth every so many hours...
