Babies: 3 - 6 Months

When did LO roll from back to belly?

My 4 mo old LO is a great belly sleeper and pedi says that we can leave him there once he rolls there on his own.  He's so strong, I think he'd be fine now but am so worried b/c of SIDS. When did your LO's roll from back to front? And (don't laugh) is there anything I can do to get him to do it sooner?

Signed,

 Desperate for more sleep!

Re: When did LO roll from back to belly?

  • Mine started at 3.5 months.  He sucks his fingers on his right hand so he rolls to trap them.  He only rolls to that side though.  I still get scared with him sleeping on his belly.  You can help him learn by gently nudging him over and helping him.  We had been practicing it before he did it on his own because my DS, like yours, slept better on his tummy.

  • He started to do it at 4 months, but just perfected it in the last 3 days.  He does it really fast now.  I've got him sleeping on his back with the sleep positioner, so he hopefully won't roll over in the middle of the night.

When we would do tummy time and he would roll from tummy to back, I would roll him back over to his tummy.  I just kept repeating it everytime he rolled over.  Don't know if that helped him learn it any faster or not.

    Good Luck Momma!

  • Just today!  She's been arching her back a lot lately when I put her on.  Just about a half hour ago she was super fussy, arched her back and rolled right over!  Maybe getting your LO super pissed off will do it.

LOL Riley keeps getting close for this reason.  She's not a fan of being horizontal and arches any time we put her down.  She wants to be held standing so she can do knee bends!

  • He started this past week... just shy of 4 months.

  • DD just rolled from back to tummy for the first time this week. DD does not sleep on her tummy so I don't have any advice, but I think if your LO can roll over, he should be fine.

Just practice with him rolling over during play time. Not sure if it works, but it never hurts!
