EBF baby not pooping

My DS has only had 3 poops since Tuesday.  At the Drs on Friday they didn't seem concerned.  My mom who is a LC and LLL leader also said that it's normal for BF babies to have times when they don't poop.

But he's been fussier than usual in the evenings and I wonder if it's because he's uncomfortable.   How long before we should be concerned?  (I read on Dr Newman's site that he saw a baby go 20 days once without pooping and there was nothing wrong with him.)

Not sure if this matters but we've been struggling with having TOO much milk.  My letdowns happen quick and fast and there seems to be a ton of it.  Poor DS nearly chokes.  Maybe he's not getting enough hindmilk?  I'm at a loss.

  • Normal. Babies get fussy in the evenings sometimes. If he were getting too much foremilk his stools would actually be looser. If the pros aren't concerned, you shouldn't be, IMO.

  • DS is also EBF.  He only poops once a week.  Pedi wasn't concerned and said its normal.  DS also gets fussy in the evening.  When he gets fussier than normal, we know he needs to poop and he will normally poop that day or the next.
  • FWIW we saw the ped the other day and he said that it's normal for some BF babies to not poop for a week. He also said that if your baby has never been like that before that you might want to get him/her checked up.

  • when we first took LO home, he didnt poop for three days. i think its nornal for ebf babies that are really young. i think as long as they have enough wet diapers they shld be good. anyway, a "funny" thought though -- enjoy the time that you dont have to change every two hours LOL. 1ht

  • DD doesn't poop every day either, she's also EBF. The first 4 days of life she pooped 4-6 times per day, then stopped. She went 10 full days without a poop. She was at the pedi twice during that time for weight checks and they were not concerned. As of now, she poops anywhere from once a day to once every 3-4 days. Her pedi and the LC told me EBF babies sometimes don't poop, since their bodies are utilizing everything they are getting from your milk. She pees a ton, and is gaining weight, so there's nothing to worry about. I'd assume it'd be the same for your LO, if there's lots of wet diapers and weight gain, you're probably fine.
