How did you tell your co-workers?

I plan to tell my manager and my co-workers pretty soon, probably the end of this week. I'll be going into my manager's office first to tell her.

I also work with eleven other people and I'm not sure how to go about telling them. Do I go to each person's office individually and say "hey, guess who's pregnant?". Do I send around a mass email with the news? Everyone that I work with is 10 + years older than me, and I'm not really close with them.

What did you do?

Re: How did you tell your co-workers?

  • I am 7 weeks - I am going to wait until I am showing and can't hide it any more.  I plan on asking to work PT in the 3rd tri, and don't plan on going back after the birth.  My manager will NOT be happy about that.....

  • With my last pregnancy it was easy. I work in a restaurant/bar and it can get a little gossipy at times. I just told two people and my work was done. By the end of the week all the regulars knew, as well as the employees and my boss had called to congratulate me. This time I'll probably do the same thing.

I let it naturally come up in conversation with pretty much everyone.  I'm a teacher, so when we started planning for the upcoming school year I told them that I wouldn't be around from November-February due to maternity leave.
  • I told my boss the day of just to let her know I couldn't do any heavy lifting. I will just tell my co-workers (I work at a daycare, so their isn't many employees).

  • I have no idea how I'll do this.  I am a teacher and work in a very small school.  I could just announce at a staff meeting and get it over with all at once.  I am not fond of the idea of going around telling everyone.  I am not the type who like a lot of attention.  I think the mass email - while effective - is weird.

I also don't like to bring a lot of attention to myself. Both of my ideas were on the sarcastic side.

  • One of them asked if I have any kids.. I said "I have one on the way." She took it upon herself to tell everyone else.

  • I actaully just told my manager this week. I know it's early, and I haven't even told my parents yet, but I had to make 3 doctors appointments within a month, and I knew she would get curious and start asking questions sooner or later she's pretty nosey. She was thrilled and so happy for me. Now it's off my back, so I can continue to schedule 1/2 days for dr's appointments and if I get morning sickness she will now understand. I work in a corporate environment, and I don't plan on telling the rest of the group for another few weeks.
  • I guess this a regional thing, but where I work, pregnancy is not a good career move.  I will wait until I absolutely can't hide it anymore to tell my boss -- and if I can make it past bonus season (December), all the better.  He'll have plenty of time to arrange coverage, and in the meantime, if it's not affecting my job, I want him to treat me like everyone else, not like someone who's about to get on the "mommy track."

As for the rest of my coworkers, it's none of their business.  I have no intention of "announcing" anything.  They'll figure it out eventually.

  • I put a treat in the staff lounge with a note that said something like "please help welcome baby S____ due March 11"

A girl my mom works with put pink and blue cupcakes in the office workroom with a note saying ___ is pregnant.  Make a prediction, will baby be a girl or boy?

  • I work in security and everyone I work with is older than me as well. I was straightforward. I came in one day and announced it and my DH announced it on one of his shifts. Gossip took over. I let everyone know when I was about 5-6 weeks along because we lift heavy things and didn't want to be lifting/pushing/pulling anything unnecessary. Some people took it overboard, like now they say "well in your condition" LMAO but that just gets me out of work, so oh well :D. Others don't treat me any differently.

  • I told my boss early, but asked him to keep it quite until 12 weeks.  At 12 weeks he announced it in our weekly dept. meeting.  Word spread after that.

I worked with 200 men and that news spread within the day.  If you think they don't gossip like women....

  • I personally don't plan on making an announcement at all. Seriously I will wait until everyone just figures it out. I told one of the teachers i work with b/c she is the only person that I trust and she knew of my m/c and was supportive so it was important to me to tell her. Other than that once I'm showing  and people start asking I'll simply say yes. I hate being center of attention but mostly I know how these teachers are going to react. I will get all sorts of unwanted advice and people grabbing my belly and making rude comments about how fat I'm getting. I can't say I'm excited about sharing the news which stinks because I loved telling everyone else.

It might be a bit unprofessional but I don't even care to tell my principal b/c truthfully she will be the worst of them. I'll keep her at bay as long as possible and once I discuss my maternity leave options with central office then I'll go to her and tell her what is up.

  • My management group all meets on Wednesdays.  I'm very close with all of them so will tell my director first and then tell the group during our meeting.  It's only 6 of us in that group.

Now, I'm still debating how to tell the people who report to me.  I think with DS #1 I told one person and it just went from there.  Of course I had people mad because they heard it from someone and I didn't tell them myself, oh well is what I say!  A different group reports to me now.  I think again I'll just tell them in a dept meeting.  I also have staff at 4 different clinics though and not sure how to do that since I mainly communicate with them through email and don't get there to often.  Email is not really my style of telling them so they just may have to wait until word of mouth or I may just make my rounds around some day to tell them all.  Although I hate attention drawn to myself to telling people I don't really know embarrasses me.

  • I plan to tell both my managers individually as soon as I'm well out of 1st tri or as soon as I begin to show (whichever comes 1st). I haven't decided how I'll tell my co-workers. Most likely it'll either be at out biweekly staff meeting or mass email (I'm actually leaning toward email)
Three angel babies...I think it's time for a change
  • I work in an office location w/ about 15 people. After I told my supervisor, she asked if she could send a mass e-mail to the others, which I was totally fine with. At least three of them had already guessed beforehand.

That is so sad...I hate our society sometimes!

  • I work in a small office of only about 15 people.  I have been there for 2 years and we are all really close knit...almost like family sometimes.  I plan to tell my boss (who is the owner) as soon as a get a definate positive from the doctor.   I may wait until week 12 to tell everyone else.  I am the youngest one there, 25, everyone else is well over 40.  A couple of the girls already knew we were trying and having difficulty, so I think it will be good news.  I run the accounting department by myself, so I am a little worried about the bosses reactoin to getting a replacement in while I am out, but hopefully it will all go over okay!
