Are bumpers (not bumpies!) really bad?

Re: Are bumpers (not bumpies!) really bad?

  • If you baby is a mover and not good with moving their head then it poses a suffocation risk.  We use ours.  DS2 is swaddled so he can't get anywhere.  If he is anything like DS1 he will get unswaddled later when he is sitting so he can move his face from the bumper.

  • When they can't move well, its a suffocation risk

Its also a SIDS risk. they now think SIDS is caused by CO2 buildup. Bumpers prevent air circulation and can cause pools of CO2.

If you really want bumpers, try the breathable ones. The regular ones aren't worth the risk IMO

  • I have have lots of friends that use them and their children are fine, but I tend to err on the side of caution. As pp said, if their face gets too close to the bumper, it can cut their oxygen intake and possibly cause SIDS. If your baby is still imobile, then you don't have much to worry about. But, If you have a roller, you might be better off taking the buper out until they're a little older.

  • besides what others have mentioned - its even dumber to put them BACK when your kids can move around. one day, when you dont even think its possible, they will use it as a step.

and they are also ugly. lol

  • We use breathable bumpers.  :)  He likes to jam his arms and legs through the rails and he is a mover in his sleep so with breatheable bumpers he can't get himself stuck and if he gets his face against it he can still breathe.

  • We have a breathable bumper because when DS is awake he purposfully *sp?* tries to stick his hands out of the crib.  *it's funny to watch, but scary too.  He sticks his hand out then opens and closes his fist while watching himself.    The one we have claims to colapse if they try to step on it when they are older.

  • As others have said, they pose a SIDS and suffocation risk.  Besides directly suffocating when getting too close, there is also the risk of rebreathing of stale air because the bumper reduce air flow.  In addition to not using bumpers, a fan is a great way to increase the air flow.  Also, no loose blankets (we use Halo sleepsacks), no pillows, and no soft toys, all for the same reasons.
