Heavy Lifting

I read somewhere that when you're pregnant  you shouldn't do a lot of heavy lifting. I lift a full laundary basket up and down the stairs all the time. DH works nights so he is usually sleeping during the day and I dont want to wake him up to do it. Is this really a big deal or should I take it more seriously?

Re: Heavy Lifting

  • depends how heavy the laundry basket it...I think if its less than 30lbs or so its okay. Just make sure you're lifting properly with your legs and not with your back/ab muscles. But I think it also depends on how much you would/could lift before you were pregnant.

I work in a farm store and am always being asked to like 50lb + bags of feed. No one there knows I'm pregnant so its hard to always find excuses to pass it off to someone else.

  • PS: If you're worried that the laundry is too heavy, take up 'half baskets' at a time
  • I thought I had read that you should stay away from lifting things that are about 30+ lbs also.

  • Is this because there is a higher rate of miscarriage or because your back is weaker?

  • It really depends on you and your doctor, IMO. Because I'm "higher risk" my doctor has restricted me to 20lbs. My laundry basket isn't that heavy, but I still have DH do it for my own peace of mind. But, everyone is different. FWIW, my doctor restricts all patients to 25lbs.

I think it is something about putting added stress on your abdominal area could cause harm (?) --same reason everything says when you exercise not to do sit ups, crunches etc...

(PS: JJSunshine,  we have the same DD. Well mines March 28 according to my LMP , won't have my dating U/S until Sept 22  Smile )

You're so lucky to have it so soon!!! They wouldn't do mine until week 12-13. I have a check up on the 25th but its just with my Family Doctor...so I don't think he'll do anything cool. I haven't been to an OBGYN because my doctor went on holidays just after my first doctor appt and I needed to get him the name of a OBGYN I wanted to use in my area. He's back tomorrow so hopefully I'll get an appt with the obgyn soon and they'll do a U/S or even a doppler to I know theres actually something in there (I haven't even had any blood work done yet because my doc f'd up...).

Wow, our babies are starting to produce pee today! (according to your little box at the end of your post). Pee has never been so exciting!

  • I am an emt and my job requires a lot of heavy lifting. My OB assured me that the only thing I could hurt was my own back. He said that as long as I was doing what my body was used to doing there would be no problems.

Haha yeah I pretty much check that ticker every day to see the fun new developments. Maybe you should switch to another docs office that will do a U/S at 8-9 weeks? I think that would drive me crazy if I had to wait until week 12 or 13!! At least you will see more at your appointment though instead of just a little blob on a screen.

Ok, now you're just being an idiot.

Unless you have a history of losses or IF issues or spotting, there is no reason to have an early u/s. You are in for a very long 40 weeks if you are that impatient.

not to start anything (but it seems like you are), is this really a necessary comment? Its completely normal to want to see your baby ASAP. If i had a million dollars I would buy a U/S machine and see my baby every day :)

Yes WAS this necessary? Sounds like you're either very immature or you get off on being nasty on these boards. Theres no need for name calling, we are all adults here not 10 year olds.

  • My oldest son weighs more than 30 pounds and there is no way I could go a whole pregnancy without lifting him.  You do what you have to.

  • My dr. told me that any of the stuff you would normally do around the house is fine.

  • Since I have had an early m/c, my MW put me on pelvic rest and told me no lifting of over 50lbs.  I think you are okay with laundry baskets, although, seriously, if they're really heavy, make a couple of trips if it makes you feel better. :)  I have set my own limitations on certain activities just to give myself peace of mind.
