Pre-School and Daycare

Do you have nights where the kids stay up late?

Sometimes on weekends my DD isn't tired, or she took a nap, or she wants to stay up to watch a movie so we let her.  As long as she doesn't have to be at school the next morning it seems ok.

She seems to adjust ok (like she'll actually sleep in the next morning), just wondering if you guys do this and how well your kids adapt.

Re: Do you have nights where the kids stay up late?

  • Yep. Tonight was one of them. She was SO good while we were out and about today so we rented a movie. She stayed up to watch that and then stayed up until DH got home (a little after 9:00) so she could see him.

We try not to let her do it during the week and keep it strictly to Friday and Saturday nights. There are some nights that she stays up late during the week to wait for DH to get off work but it's pretty rare.

  • Yes. More in the summer. I'm careful during the school year though.
  • Yep.  It's fairly uncommon, but it certainly happens.  Tonight, for instance, we arrived at my mom and dad's house at 9:30 p.m.  She wanted to visit with Nonna and Poppa for a bit, so she didn't end up going to bed until about 10:30.

My kids don't adjust, though.  They'll be up bright and early the next morning, no matter what time they go to bed.  And they both need at least 12 hours of sleep to function well the next day.  Because of that, we're pretty strict with bedtimes most of the time.

Ditto. I'm pretty strict about having them home and in bed on time. It sucks for us, because their bedtimes are between 6 and 7pm, but since I'm a SAHM and have to deal with the consequences I deal with it.

  • now and then we'll let Griffin stay up a little later - but he doesn't tend to sleep in more if he's up late- so we don't do it often or he loses a lot of sleep and ends up fussy b/c of it.
  • Yes.  It has happened quite a bit over the summer because we dont have to be up early.  He has still been in bed by 9 or 930, and has slept til btw 7-8 which is great for me because during the school year we are up at 6.  During the school year I really keep his schedule bc if I dont and he is tired he is  A WILDMAN!
  • Evert night :).  We try to have them in bed by 9:30 but most nights it is around 10pm.  Last night Lily stayed up until 11pm and went to the grocery store with me.

  • Lol, DD has a normal bedtime of 10pm...so that would be every night. Sometimes even later...10:30 or 11pm. Last night she went down at 10pm and woke up at 11am this morning. 13 hours of sleep! There's no way in the world I'd put her down at 7pm, it just doesn't work (she'd be up at 4am).

  • I don't but my kids are still a bit young.  I could easily see where this could happen.  We do fudge DD's bedtime a little but it's not that much -- maybe 15 minutes -30 minutes.  Sadly she is very consistent about getting up early.  I can't wait until at least one of them sleeps in!

  • We had a very late night last night at my parents, so my kids didn't go to bed until 11:30ish.  They will usually adjust and sleep in later, although my son is getting up at 8:45 ish no matter what lately.  My kids have a late bedtime, but they sleep in later which works for us, because my dh works nights, and will be with them in the morning.
  • Definitely. Sometimes DD is playing so nicely and having such a great time, she stays up late. And sometimes she's up so late that DH is almost home from work, so I'll let her stay up for that. And sometimes we go out to a friend's house and don't get back until late.

Most of the time, DD wakes up around the same time regardless of when she goes to bed, but sometimes she will sleep in a bit.  If she seems tired the next day, I'll either put her to bed early or make her take an afternoon rest, and we'll try to have a quiet day.

I'm not too rigid with DD's schedule because to me that's one of the advantages of being a SAHM. I don't have to wake her up for daycare or anything, so we just kind of go with the flow.

  • we have on the weekends - usually only Friday nights.  Her sleeping in is hit or miss - sometimes she does, sometimes not.  Usually she requires an earlier nap though.

when she doesn't stay up late, she has much more energy the next morning.  But we like to let her stay up occassionally to watch a movie if she has had a good week.

Her typical bedtime is 8pm, and staying up later would mean no later than 10pm.

  • We do it if we are out of have company.  We had my FIL's birthday party last night and did a dinner cruise and didn't get home until basically bedtime, it wasn't a big deal and the kids did fine.  We were out to dinner Sat night and the kids were doing great and asked for ice cream so we went and they got to sleep about 30 mins late.  Not something we do all the time but on the weekends, we don't stress over it.
