Dumb Question

When you go for your first OB appointment everyone says the doctor will probably do an internal exam and this can be uncomfortable for the woman. I thought an internal exam would just be what you get every yr at your regular gyno exam. Is this correct or is an internal exam to check the position of the uterus, ect something different?

It is the same thing they do at the annual exam, I think it is just uncomfortable b/c your ute is growing and more sensitive!

    Makes sense, thanks!

  • I also had a pap done because I was due for one. It was more uncomfortable than usual because your cervix is more sensitive.
  • FTR- My doc doesn't do the internal until 16 wks.
  • Mine was a pap even though I wasn't due. I guess it is better to do it in the beginning rather than at 7 months. She also checked my uterus position. Honestly, it wasn't uncomfortable, but I've had so many hands and surgical instruments in my vag since December, I think I'm used to it.

Interesting.  Does yours do early ultrasounds or something?  My doc does internal w/ the first OB appt at 8-9 weeks, to check size of uterus to make sure things seem in line for dates.  Only one ultrasound the entire pregnancy, at the 20 week mark, unless something seems unusual or there are complications.

    My appts. go like this

8 wk nurse intake with bloodwork

    12 wk anatomy scan

    16 wk physical

    20 wk u/s

    I don't remember after that.

  • I thought the whole purpose of a pap with your first appointment was to make sure you didn't have anything wrong going on down there. That way if you did then it could be treated right away. My office does a full pap and std testing with the first appointment. I'm not opting out of that because I want it on record that I do not have any std so I can decline the eye gunk they give the baby.
  • All my dr did at the first appointment (checking-wise) was to check to see if my uterus had started to move up and a test for something...goneria (spelling?) or something like that. It's routine and they do it at the beginning of every pregnancy. I've heard that some drs do a pap in the beginning, even if youre not sue for one. Mine doesn't.

In some states this is mandated by law and the parent is not able to decline. I have no idea about your state and if you already know this, sorry!
