The BGs are our favorites - the organic all in ones with snaps, primarily, but we also like the sized all in ones and pockets.
The Smartipants were cheap...I think I paid $7 each for them. They're not as a cute and we don't like the colors, but they are very reliable diapers for us and the insert comes out in the wash so there is no unstuffing.
Softbums are an all in two system. The sizing is really cool...no ugly snaps on the outside of the diaper.
You can go to Peapods in St Paul to check out BGs, Fuzzibunz, Softbums, and prefolds. Linden Hills Natural Home in Minneapolis has an even bigger selection. They also carry detergents.
We use Bumgenius 3.0s, Flip, and sized AIOs. My fav are the AIOs but I like them all. I've tried Happy Heiny and Cutey Baby and wouldn't recommend those.
ETA: I've heard good things about Kawaii too plus they are inexpensive. I'd try them if I didn't already have too many dipes in my stash.
Not a mom yet, but we're going to use SoftBums. I received my first diapers last week and they are super soft. Plus they are a local company so for me that's a plus.
for newborn, we used kissaluz size zero and loved them. Now we use Fuzzibunz pocket diapers. They are one size, they have SNAPS, and are super easy to use. We bought our kissaluvs at peapod, and our fuzzibunz at pacifier. Love them!
This is a very big question and you will get many answers. Check out Diaperpin.com for reviews on various diapers. The eco friendly family blog is a great place to ask questions. I have talked about our strategy on my blog:
