Antibiotics for strep throat?

Do you need them for this?  I am pretty sure I have it.  Big white stop on the back of my throat.  No fever or other symptoms. Hurts like a mother...

Re: Antibiotics for strep throat?

  • YES!!! Strep is a form of a staph infection and can get very bad very fast. :( Feel better soon!

  • yep you would need antibiotics.

i have had terrible sore throats with the white spots on my tonsils and never tested positive for strep.  it was just a viral infection, step is bacterial (i think).  they gave me antibiotics anyway and it helps within 24-48 hours.

  • Sooo what you're telling me is that I need to go to the Dr. regardless? ; )

Guess I have to wait til Monday.  Figures I would get sick on a Fri night.

  • strep can get bad fast - i would personally go to the ER and get started on meds right away. I have gone to the ER twice in my life b/c of strep starting on a weekend - never regretted it.... if i wait I am close to death with strep.

  • I'd go to an urgent care first thing in the morning. A few around here are open on Sunday.
  • How do I know if it's strep?  It started on thursday, just a little sore, but now there's a white spot.  I guess if it's the same or worse in the morning I will have to go. Boo
  • If it is strep throat then- no.You do not actually have to have an antibiotic for strep throat. Strep throat will go away on its own with or without treatment. Antibiotics are often given to shorten the amount of time that you are able to spread it. If you do not take antibiotics, you can be  contagious even after the symptoms dissapear on their own (can take a few weeks until you no longer are). With antibiotics you are usually only contagious until 24 hours after starting the antibiotic.

If you are unsure of what it could be, I would go get a culture done.

  • While yes step can get better on it's own I think most doctors would recommend antibiotic treatment if a strep test came back positive. I'm guessing they would be worried if they didn't prescribe antibiotics and the patient got rheumatic fever.
  • Definitely go to the doc.

I had it a few years ago and chose to be an idiot, not going to the doctor because the clinic in our little town was icky. Let me just say that I have never been so sick in my entire life.

Then DH got strep, went to the clinic, and was feeling better very quickly.

Go to the doctor!!! Or urgent care!
