NEFR: toddler blood work?

Have any of you had to do this? How did it go? any tips? Our pedi just gave us a rx for it and I'm putting it of... I am worried about it. :( Addy is just so squirmy and tantrumy lately when you try to get her to do anything she doesn't want to do and/or hold still. Ugh.

Re: NEFR: toddler blood work?

  • DS had b/w done recently.  It was at the end of a 3 hr allergy testing appt so I was very concerned about how it was going to go.  I was surprised by how still DS stayed.  I think he was scared so he was still.  He sat on my lap and I sang in his ear.  He whined when they put the rubber tie on and cried when the needle went in, but he settled down quickly.  Good luck!!!

  • At the hospital we do a pseudo-swaddle with a sheet, leaving one arm out. They usually get over it pretty quick, just are not a fan of people in scrubs for the rest of the visit. Good luck!

With 1 year olds? I can see swaddling a 6 month old  but I dunno if my active 15 mo old will let me swaddle her... lol

  • Our pedi routinely does b/w for lead and iron at 12, 15, and 18 months so we're used to it.  It's not fun, but the nurses are used to squirmy kids so it's not as bad as it sounds.  DS always sits on my lap and I help hold his arm still.  It's over quick and he only cries for a minute.

  • C can't stand xrays but will do just fine for blood work and shots.  Its weird.  She may surprise you.  Just make sure she sits in your lap and you hold her other arm so she doesn't interfere.
