Babies: 9 - 12 Months

overtired?

My son is ten months old. Yesterday he fell asleep at 3pm and slept till 730am. He went back to sleep this morning from 10-12. We took him out to lunch thinking we'd get him out of the house and he FREAKED out in the restaurant (TOTALLY out of character) We ran him out of there and home and he was back to sleep by 2pm. He has been out for the night since (& he'll sleep through the night) I called his doctor and I'm waiting for the call back. I don't want to run to the hospital for sleeping (he has no fever) I'm just wondering if anyone else's children have slept to this extreme? And what would you do? At first I thought it was just a growth spurt but I'm getting alittle concerned now.

Re: overtired?

  • To be honest, I would be a little worried too. Can you leave an after-hours message for your doctor? That way if it can wait until Monday or nothing to worry about it, they can let you know? My son has pretty consistent sleep habits, so a drastic change would cause me to worry too. Good luck and keep us posted.

  • And sorry - somehow I missed the part about you already calling your doctor. Better safe than sorry. :)

  • My DD did this last week.  One night she slept 16 hours (never woke from her late nap) and the other nights and naps were way more than usual.  She eventually had a fever and we went to the ped.  It was something viral and I just gave her Tylenol for a day or two until it was all gone.

  • my DD is a champion sleeper and she occasionally does stuff like that when hitting a growth spurt or when teething.  But, I think you should def. call the on call doc and run it by them tonight...
  • DD has slept more than usual when teething but that is a lot. I would do what u are doing and talk to the pedi.

My guess would be either a growth spurt (there's one around 9 months I think), or coming down with something. My DD slept kind of like that (taking 4 hour naps, being up for an hour, then sleeping for 12 more hours, etc.) right before she got her first cold. If it continues for more a couple days, I'd definitely check it out, even if he seems fine in other ways
