Okay, since this pumping & working mama thing are new to me, please tell me how you do it. I'm really at a loss here. I guess this is where a LLL meeting might be helpful!
Specifically:
-When do you pump, how often & how much do you yield?
-What type of container do you pump into, and do you use that right away or do you freeze for later?
-Also, while she's at daycare all day (7-3) should I provide her with separate bottles for each feeding, or do you think it is okay to just re-use the same bottle? (Yikes. I sure hope I have enough! Luckily, I will be able to go down to nurse once a day since she is in my building.)
-What is your cleaning/sterilizing routine?
I never had ANY IDEA how much work this would be. And I didn't even officially start back at school yet=(
TIA!
Re: Pumpin' Mamas- Come In!
When I went back to work, I would pump during the day at work, every 2-3 hours and once before I went to bed. I don't remember how much I would get...3-5 oz I think?
I pumped into the Medela bottles and stored them in the bottles in the fridge (tape on the lid with the date). I would usually leave them in the fridge for a few days and freeze when I had enough. I would freeze into the Lansinoh storage bags. 4-6 oz in each bag depending on how much he was eating. They lay flat so they are easy to stack in the freezer. However, don't stack them until they are frozen b/c I think they can freeze and stick together if you do.
For daycare, I would defrost the bags that I needed for that day in a bowl of warm water and take the milk in those bags. I didn't have to worry about separate bottles because we used the playtex drop-ins. I would just send enough nipples that they could use a new one for each bottle.
During the day, after pumping, I would rinse the parts and then store them in a ziploc bag in the refrigerator at work. At night, I would let them soak in a bowl of very hot water and soap. Rinse and reuse. I probably sterilized by boiling only a couple of times.
Every once in awhile we would give G a bottle of formula before bedtime and I would pump for that feeding to build my stash before I went back to work.
I'm so glad you asked about this! I've been stressing about it since I'm going back to work in 2 weeks. I have to be in my classroom this week to get it set up, so K will be going to the sitter for 2 1/2 days. Here is what I have "planned" so far. I know things might change though.
I plan on breastfeeding K around 6:30am or so and then dropping him off at the sitter around 7:30am. I have my planning period from 10:00-10:40am everyday, so that is the only time in the morning I'll have to pump. Three and a half hours after feeding K isn't ideal, but it is the only thing I can do. Our lunch starts at 11:15, which is going to be too soon to pump again. So, I am going to have to find someone to cover my class around 1pm so I can pump again. I'm able to leave work at 3:35, so I'll go pick up K and head home right away so I can feed him. On the days that I have to stay late for a meeting or something, I'll just have to pump right after my kids leave for the day.
I'll probably pump in to the Medela bottles, since I want to keep my Dr. B bottles for the sitter's house. I'm not sure if I should send his milk in seperate bottles, or if it would be ok to just send in the freezer bags and have the sitter reuse the bottle I do send. Hmm...
Oh, and I'm not going to have much time to rinse my pump parts at work. I plan on just sticking them in a ziploc bag and storing them in the fridge between pumping sessions. I'll give them a good wash when I get home each evening. I might buy the Medela wipes just so I can wipe them down after each session.
Ugh, this is such hard work!
