toddler shoe question

when do you stop looking at how flexible the sole of the shoe is?  I have a hard time buying shoes with thick soles because of the whole "barefoot is best" thing when she was just learning to walk, but I'm pretty sure she's probably past that now as she can do a full out sprint in cowboy boots...

Re: toddler shoe question

  • I think he was close to 2.  He had flexible sole shoes with velcro that he would take off all the time.  I got tired of repeatedly putting them back on so I purchase a pair of sneakers with laces with no regard to the sole.

  • I still look for some flexibility in his shoes. I won't buy super stiff ones yet or maybe ever.
  • As soon as stride right stopped making them in Joe's size ;-)  I think it was around 18 months or 2 yrs. He has big feet. I figure if Stride Right isn't offering them, then he obviously doesn't need them. ;-)

  • A little before her 2nd birthday. I bought her some Keds which have thick soles and she did fine with them. It doesn't even cross my mind anymore.

  • DD is 21 months and I still do and will continue to eventhough they can be pricey IMO. I've looked for less expensive shoes like at target and stuff but they just seem really stiff to me. Just cuz they can walk in them doesn't mean that they're good for their feet imho. We wear heels (well at least I used to) but they're not the best right :)...
  • My impression has always been that the soft soles were more about learning to walk than long term benefits. As soon as my kids were proficient walkers I put them in whatever shoes I thought were cute. This means both soft and hard soled shoes. My toddler wears some See Kai Run style knockoffs on almost a daily basis but he also wears a super cute pair of Converse all the time and they are stiff.

I know they say so much about soft soled shoes and I agree they are probably better but this is probablyalso the 1st generation of children since kids started wearing real shoes that has had the soft soles thrust upon them. When most of us were kids, we wore hard leather soled boot type shoes and so did the generations before us. These generations still produced dancers, athletes and scholars.

This is me, too. Mathis is currently rocking some super cute gray Vans, which have a really hard sole but he has been walking really well for over 3 months. When he doesn't wear those, he has some soft soled "sandals" and little Crocs that he wears. T also wore hard soled shoes starting around 15 months, when he had been walking for a while.

OMG- I had these little red booties that were hard on the sides and sole. My mom was obsessed with them. She said she saved for months to buy them and I wore them every.single.day.
