What to do with all my books?

The room that is being turned into Paige's room used to be my office/library/computer room. My H build me a 7ft book shelf where I stored hundreds of books... literally. I have since gotten rid of 4 boxes of books because many were just collecting dust and would never be read again.

We have no room in the rest of the house to put the book shelf so it is staying in Paige's room. I would hate to have that book shelf bare but I'm kinda leary about putting my books back on it. I've gotten down to about two/three rows of books out of the 6.

Do I just put all my books on the top rows and leave the bottom part bare for baby related items and books? Do I try to find a smaller books shelf that can fit my books and try to find room in the master bedroom?

What would you do?

Re: What to do with all my books?

  • That's a tough one. I'd probably try to find room elsewhere but if it came down to it, they'd probably be all right in her room. At least until she's big enough to start having opinions about it herself. :)

  • I'd probably only keep out the ones that were really important to me and box up the rest in tubs and put them in the attic/basement/back of a closet.

  • Is the bookshelf fixed to the wall for safety? If so, I don't see a problem with it being in there, with your books on the top shelves. What aboug putting her books on the bottom ones, so ultimately she'll be able to reach them to browse and read (mixed with soem toys?), and some decorative family frames/objects on the middle ones? From an aesthetic point of view it might look unbalanced, but it serves your storage purpose, and works for her. (I like the idea that she'll have all your books in there, maybe influencing her love of reading?)

  • Our nursery also had all of our bookshelves filled with hundreds of books. We packed up some to store (we are planning in moving in a couple years) in our basement and moved some of the nicer looking shelves into the living room and put books back on them. Is there any space where you could put bookshelves in the living room, master bedroom, or even along the walls in the dining room?

  • I would personally make room for a smaller bookcase in the master bedroom. That's where all my books are (split between a 5 shelf and a 3 shelf bookcase) and I really like what it adds to the room.

There is no room in the living room because we have one wall that is all window. The other three have the big screen, couch and loveseat.  Dining area is in the kitchen so there is no way to put books in there. There is a little space next to my night stand but that is where the bassinet is going to be for the first couple of months.

Who knew books would be such a pain in the a$$.

  • once your LO becomes mobile I wouldn't have a non kid bookshelf in their room. DS is good for pulling stuff off of shelves. I put all his books in little mesh baskets that ways it's not as easy. I store all my books in rubbermades in the garage. Not ideal but it works.

  • Oh, I am having the same problem.  LO's room was my library and like you I have hundreds of books.  I'm thinking of transforming some of my bookcases into a headboard for my bed.  We'll see if it works!

I've decided that since I live in a small space, it is not possible for my LO's room to be exclusively his stuff.  Most of it will be, but I'll need some of the closet space, etc.  If you're in the same situation, then I think you should go ahead and leave some of your books on the top rows.  It will look fine!

But surely if they're the top shelves, it's not something she'll be able to reach? And as long as the shelves were safely attached to the wall, so they couldnt' fall down, it should be okay?

We actually uave an old bookshelf as clothes storage in DS's room. It's not enough for two LOs, but for him, with pull out decorative boxes and stacked linens on the top 2/3, and toys and his books on teh bottom, it works really well. We also have bookshelves lining a wll in our living room, and again the bottom shelve are his books/toys. He's never attempted to reach beyond them.

This was my thought too. She probably wouldn't be able to reach "mommy's books" until she was about 3-4 years old and by then I expect those books would have been moved out and into another area.

This. You have to make sure the book shelf is permanently anchored to the wall. You should be able to pull it and climb on it without having it budge. The second Paige starts crawling, this becomes a very real threat.

  • I love to read so I have a lot of books but also have no room for them.  I started using a website, paperbackswap.com to get rid of my old books and get a few that I wanted/needed.  Maybe this will help elimanate some of your collection so it is more managable.  Other than that I would keep the bookshelf up and just make sure it is secured tot he wall.  Put the books on a higher shelf and you can use the lower ones for some of the babies things or decorations.
