need swaddling help

My DDs keep busting out of their swaddle me blankets.  The size small is too short for their long legs and sometimes they can kick the bottom part off.  The size large doesn't velcro tight enough and they can squirm and get their arms out.

If you still swaddle, what type of blanket do you use and does it work?

Re: need swaddling help

  • We use a large SwaddleMe, but DD2 is nearly 17lbs and maybe 24"? long, so it fits her. I do have to pull the velcro pretty tight, and wrap it almost underneath her...  I love it though. Dumb question, I'm sure, but do they make a medium? If not, I know people swear by their Miracle Blankets. They're pricey though, and for two...

  • My DD is the same...Unfortunately there is no med...I think it is time to start weaning her from the swaddle.

Once DS got too big for the s/m and the large was way too big, we quit swaddling and switched to a sleep sack.  That was when he was around 3 months old. GL!

  • We use the Woombie. DS loves that thing, he can't escape it and it stretches with him just a little bit. it is defenitely our go to for naps and bedtime.

This. If you buy it, buy it a little bigger, and get one of the new ones they have that are supposedly stretchier and better for the transition out of the swaddle. Your pedi will probably start telling you by 4 months not to swaddle anymore.

  • I've never heard of the woombie, but just looked it up.  I hate to spend $60 (for 2) if they are only going to be swaddled for another month.  Why do these things have to be so expensive!

  • I use this https://www.ergopouch.com.au/swaddle.html and have had great success.  Once they no longer need to be swaddled, it turns into a sleepsack.  It is very light and DS loves it.  I bought a few for some friends and their LO's also enjoy them.  Maybe it would help?

  • Once DD was strong enough to break out of a swaddle, we switched to the swaddle sleep sack. To minimize the risk that she would suffocate herself when pulling out her arms, I made sure that the swaddle was pretty low, below her shoulders. That way, when her arms came free, they were above the swaddle material and not under it, pushing it up towards her face. Now that she doesn't need her arms swaddled to sleep anymore she sleeps with her arms above her head almost all the time!
  • We used Halo Sleepsack Swaddles with DS2 (as compared to the SwaddleMe with DS1).  And the Halo ones are so much better!  They are more expensive, but they are designed as a 2-in-1, so the swaddle part is removable when you are done swaddling, leaving just the sleepsack.  I found this to be very helpful with the de-swaddling process (now he sleeps in regular Halo sleepsacks every night).  I highly recommend the Halo ones.

Why would you not swaddle after 4 months? We still swaddle, and DD is 5 months, and have no issues. Our pedi is ok with it too. DD still has a small startle reflex.

OP: Aden&Anais swaddle blankets have saved us! They are HUGE! A little pricey, but completely worth it!
