Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Just miscarried & have questions..

Hi there....this board has come very highly recommended by other nesties for the fact that the women on here are so supporative, etc. I just want to say I am so grateful to have this to come to for support, encouragement and questions, so thanks in advance!

So I miscarried last night and this what happened (this was my first pregnancy):

Started yesterday morning with brown discharge...not so worried...then throughout the day it turned pink and I started having very bad menstrual like cramps...I had a gut feeling something bad was going to happen.....all weekend I havent felt very good (thought maybe morning sickness was kicking in, but obviously not) then throughout the night last night, around 12:30 I started getting REALLY bad cramping, I couldn't bare it anymore and tylenol wasn't working...went to the bathroom and there was bright red blood...called the doctor and they said it sounded like the start of a miscarriage and to either wait it out at home or go to the ER if I was in alot of pain....so I went to the ER.

While I was there the pain/blood (turning into clots) got worse and worse...at one point I went to the bathroom and had a huge clot (about the size of 4 quarters) that I passed (they suspected that was the sac later)...then I had an internal & external utlrasound which revealed nothing...also the blood work they did right before I passed the huge clot was at 1380 BETA which is weird being I guess that means I would be like 4-5 weeks preg? (I should have been 8) I guess maybe that was an indication things were going backwards or the embryo stopped growing?...I dont know.

I just keep telling myself everything is meant to happen for a reason, and obviously something wasn't right....I am just glad I passed it naturally and didn't need a D&C and it was still early....However, it certainly doesn't take the hurt and sadness away though.

I do have a quick question though...I am getting pretty bad cramps on my left side....and throughout the pregnancy I felt them on that side most of the time? Is this means for concern?

Also...how soon should these go away? I am on painkillers right now, so it is bearable but I have to go to work tmr, and most likely will only be able to take tylenol.

Thank you so much in advance!

Re: Just miscarried & have questions..

  • I cant give you to much advice because i myself just went into labor and lost my baby lastnight at 15 weeks.  I just want to say how sorry i am to hear this and i hope everything goes well for u.  i would suggest taking a couple days off work to let yourself heal up.  sorry it is not better answers to your question.

  • LAST YEAR I MISCARRIED AT 7WKS, AND I THINK I BLED FOR 4-5 DAYS AFTER PASSING THE BIG CLOTS, SUPER COMMON TO HAVE PAIN FOR A FEW DAYS AFTERWARDS. THE OB DR'S WHERE I WORK USUALLY PRESCRIBE VICODIN AND HAVE YOU COME IN 2-3WKS   AFTER MISCARRYING JUST TO GIVE YOU AN INTERNAL AND MAKE SURE EVERYTHING HAS CLEANED OUT. IT DOES SUCK, BUT I'D SAY 8 OUT OF 10 OF OUR PATIENTS (OF ALL AGES) HAVE A MISCARRIAGE AT LEAST ONCE. GOOD LUCK AND SO SORRY.
  • I am sorry for your loss.

  • I am very sorry for your loss!  The size of the clot sounds about the size my sac was.  I should have been further along in size too -- my OB said that if things are not going to go right, sometimes they don't progress as quickly.  I too had pains on my left side -- not sure what they were though.  They went away a few weeks post m/c.  I bled for a long time after my m/c (induced with medicine) -- heavy bleeding ended 6 days post m/c.  I had some retained conception material and passed that about two weeks ago.  Hopefully your doctor will monitor you so you know what is going on with your body.  Sorry you had to join our little club -- and I hope you find comfort here.

  • If possible, I say call in sick tomorrow. You're probably going to have a heavy flow and cramping for a couple of days.

I'm sorry you lost your baby. My thoughts are with you.

  • I am so sorry for your loss.  Cramping is going to be normal for a while.  If you are concerned you could talk to your dr. to get some reassurance that it is normal.  I had cramping heavy for a few days and then it slowed.  Again, I am so sorry for your loss.

  • I am so sorry you are going through this. I've also had some pain in one area and I've never had any complications post-miscarriage with anything remaining in my uterus or a continuing problem. ?I hope you have the same. ?

Good luck making it through work. ?That would be tough. ?I went back to work pretty quickly with my first one, but it hit me a few days later and I needed some time off. ?I think it maybe took a few days for the shock to wear off and the full impact to hit.?

  • I am really sorry for your loss.  I lost two very early - about 5 weeks and 4 weeks 2 days.  The first time I did not have much cramping but I had a lot of clotting.  This loss has been different - the cramping has been really bad - not sure why because my beta was still really low.  I still get cramps on either side - it alternates.  Again, I am so sorry for you.

  • I don't have any advice since I didn't have a natural m/c but I wanted to say sorry for your loss and ((hugs))

  • I'm sorry for your loss, I know how painful it can be/ I have had two. It is hard to believe but it does get better. Hugs
  • Big hugs to you right now.  It seems that we've had several dfw girls miscarry recently.  If you are concerned about the cramps give your doctor's office a call.

Also, just a word of advice, I miscarried naturally as well, and the bleeding and pain would start and stop.  While at work I would keep up a continuous dosage of tylenol if possible.

Please stay a while on this board and when you are ready, come over to TTC after a loss.  The women on both of these boards are wonderful.  I'm so sorry you are going through this.

  • I'm sorry for what you are going through.  I just went through it on Saturday. I'm still bleeding pretty heavily and the cramps are just starting to let up a bit.  I too had horrible pain on one side, but my doctor last night explained that they also found a cyst on my left side - lucky me.  I took two days off of work just to give myself a break physically and also to prepare mentally.  Your hormone levels are dropping rapidlly right now so the emotions are pretty instense as well.  Have you scheduled a follow-up yet?  They'll want to make sure your levels are going down and that all the tissue has passed. Hugs to you.

  • Thank you so much for all your responses. It means so much to me. I did manage to make it through work today...It actually helped to keep my mind of things...though it was stressful and part of me wanted to tell everyone "I just had a miscarriage, leave me the hell alone!!!!".....I also went and did blood work this morning..my betas are dropping like they should be so thats good. I go for a follow up apt. on Monday. Again, thank you for the support!
  • I just wanted to tell you I'm so sorry for your loss!!
