Natural Birth

no classes in my area

I'm still really early in my pregnancy and I'm really new to the idea of natural birth but I started searching for classes on natural childbirth and the closest I can find is a two hour drive which really just isn't feasible AND one session just started and the next starts two weeks before my due date. Has anyone done natural without a class? I've bought a few books but that just seems like a silly and naive thought to think I can read a book a be prepared for it. Are there any other suggestions? thanks!

Re: no classes in my area

  • I know that hypnobabies has a study at home class that you can order off amazon for about $150. You could try that.

  • You might try calling your midwife or the instructor of that class to see if they know anyone closer to you. I have a friend who teaches natural birth classes, but she doesn't advertise and her certification isn't always up to date. Maybe there's someone like that near you.

  • Try looking up the Bradley method, Hypnobabies/Hypnobirthing...aside from that you can contact midwives, a doula, a naturopath/homeopath in  your area as they may know someone that could help you.

Not sure if you have it already, but Ina May's Guide to Childbirth is fantastic and might make you feel better about doing it without a class if need be.  I'm planning a natural birth (if all goes according to plan) and while I did take hypnobirthing, it wasn't a "natural childbirth" class per se, so most of my knowledge has come from books, online, experiences from friends and family.

    Good luck!

  • You don't need to give up on natural birth just because there is no class in your area!!  You can take a regular childbirth class and learn a lot there- even if you don't want an epidural- it's not like learning about them will hurt you!  ... and you can supplement that with books.  If you don't have a big budget to buy a lot of specialty book- you can always use the inter-library loan system to order the books you want- it's almost free- I think $1 per book for shipping charges.

I took a regular hospital childbirth class, read the Bradley book and did a drug free VBAC (with a doula) ... now I've had 3 VBACs and still haven't done a special class.

  • You can do it without special classes or programs.  We didn't do Bradley, Hypnobabies, or anything like that.  We just took the hospital class and I read a few books geared towards natural childbirth.
