Flat Head

Is anyone else experiencing this with their LO?  My son tends to sleep on the right side and I'm getting worried that he's getting flat head on the right side.  I try to move his head to the other side when he sleeps but it doesn't seem to work.  Help! Any suggestions?

Re: Flat Head

  • I have the same worry with my son, he likes to sleep on his left. For now I put him on head support pillow and always arrange him so that he is on his right. As a long-term solution I purchased love nest pillow. Search for it on internet. I heard good things about it. Also have him seen by PT since always turning to one side can lead to neck issues

  • I don't have a baby yet but am home sick today and just reading all over the boards.

I read in one of my books a suggestion for this was to put a side mobile on the crib and then alternate the direction you put the baby in the crib each time so that they look towards the mobile and because you are alternating the way they are lying down they are switching sides.

Not sure if it will work, but thought I'd pass the idea along....

  • We're having this issue with my 12 week old DS. He always turns his head to sleep on the right, and even prefers to always look to the right. We took him to a pt who for $150 told us it wasn't a neck muscle issue (torticollis) and to do a couple of things:

    - increase tummy time, rotate his mattress in case there is a slope in it, turn crib around so that interesting stuff is to the left, turn his swing around so that he has to look to his left to see us - basically put all interesting things to the opposite side he favors

I also put him down to sleep with his head turned left now, and figure it is the best I can do. If he turns it during the night, there isn't much more I can do.

I've since met other mothers who had this issue and said once their baby started sitting up themselves their heads eventually rounded out more. Since doing all the things the pt suggested, his head is looking a little better. Good luck with your LO.
