Back Handed Compliment

My uncle just said, "you're losing weight too.  That's great.  You were big there for a second.  I was worried."

He's lucky we're related.

On the upside, at least I have lost enough weight that people are noticing.

  • Why can't people leave it at "you look good" and leave out the rest? Ugh I'm sorry.
  • Lovely. But yay for noticable weight loss!

  • Like you said at least you've lost a noticable amount of weight!  Congrats!

A few years ago I got on an exercise kick and was eating very healthy and lost a few pounds but was also more toned so it looked like more.  My dad was shocked to see me (note I only dropped 10-15 pounds) and asked me if I was healthy or if there was something else going on that he needed to know about.  One of those "you look good but..." moments.  I just laughed and told him to be happy if I was happy.

This exactly. I'm sorry, some people need to think before they speak!

  • good for you! But you are right, what a weird way of saying it.

It sounds like something my dad would say too. He doesn't mean to be rude, he just isn't good with understanding how I (or anyone) inturprets what he means. Like last week I was telling him I was afraid to gain too much weight in the second tri. He says "well go join the gym and take up running again cause you might never lose the weight if you put it on, it's what happened to your mom". Awesome.

  • Eeeeewwwww.  What is WRONG with people???

My dad seriously said the same exact thing.  Thank God my parents are divorced.
