Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Can a baby overeat something like fruit?

I always thought DD would self regulate when it came to self-feeding, but I'm not so sure. We had breakfast and DD was given a handful of cheerios, one scrambled egg, one jumbo strawberry, handful of large blueberries, and 2 oz of juice. All on her tray for her to pick up herself. She still wants more fruit. I don't see how it can all fit in her stomach, but I don't want her to be hungry either? Do you give set portions or do you just continue offering food until they no longer take it?

Re: Can a baby overeat something like fruit?

  • I know that my baby can.  He usually doesn't eat much because he's too busy playing, but we found that we have to actually cut him off with watermelon.  He wanted more and more and after a while I realized I had given him a few cups, so I finally told him "all done" and he spent the rest of the day pooping.  Seriously.  Like five runny poop diapers, when usually he has maybe two total in one day.

  • I let DD determine when meals are done, but I do limit how much fruit she has. If she has too much, I'll pay for it with her diapers the next day. Same with cheese, apples, and broccoli - I just give her a certain portion to spare us all the after-effects, and if she's still hungry I give her something else.
  • That's a LOT of food for an 8 month old. At that age, solids are really meant to be a supplement to breastmilk or formula, not as a complete replacement.  And yes, kids can definitely overeat solids (fruit is no exception). The problem is that if she fills up on solids, she will not be hungry for bm/formula, which is where she should be getting the majority of her calories and nutrition right now.

Personally, I'd give nurse or give a bottle first, then offer solids.

  • Adding to my response above, fruit is the last thing we offer DD during meals otherwise that's all she'll want. We give her the protein and veggie first, then whatever carb she gets that day (toast, potato, or pasta), then fruit last. She will always eat the fruit.
  • I don't know, but when DD keeps asking for more like that, I usually find half of the stuff in her seat after I lift her from the highchair.
