Calf pain

At 13wk 3d my calves started being sore and have not stopped. Its like it is the day after a tough workout sore. I strech them and have been drinking a ton of water but it does not go away. Anyone else have this and any idea what may help them?

Well I am not sure this will help ? but here goes. You do realize you have to take things a little slower now that you are pregnant ? no hard work-outs or extraneous exercising. You can still do it just in moderation at the present.

I like to walk - before getting pregnant I would do so 4 times a week (usually every other day) also like to run (doing that) a couple of times a weeks also. Before starting either - I do stretching exercises to loosen the leg muscles first. This keeps the pain down. Since the weather is so hot here right now I have been going to the mall after work for a brisk walk around inside only three times a week - right now though.

If I come in tired, hot, cramping (of my legs) I go over to my brother?s place to use their hot tub, whirlpool/Jacuzzi. If I use it the water jets hitting my legs just gives a relaxing massage bringing down the pain. Sometimes I just ask DH (Fred) to give me a good relaxing leg massage. This usually works just as well. He?s good at that!

Soaking in a hot tub of water (as hot as you can stand) will also loosen relax those muscles which will relieve pain.

Do you sleep all night ? if so use a pillow under your knees toward the ankles (this will give your legs a little extra support) so that will help also since you probably can not sleep on your tummy very easily right now?

I hope this give you at least a starting point for further help.

  • I've had muscle cramps related to low potassium, most commonly after a workout. I don't know if low potassium is what's causing your calf pain but if it is then you might find some relief from a quick snack of something high in potassium like a banana, for example. Good luck!

  • I was talking to two women yesterday who have both had babies within the past year.  I mentioned leg cramps (I have thigh cramps) and they both assumed I meant calf and spoke of that being a normal pregnancy symptom that they both had.  Possible lack of potassium mentioned.  Also mentioned was stretching foot back to relieve the cramp.
