Potty Training

Refusing to use potty at sitters?

Any tips or suggestions PLEASE!

DD (who is very thick headed) has been pretty much potty trained for two weeks now. She goes to the sitter 2x/wk. The first week she was trained we were on vacation so she didn't go but she went this last week. On day one she had accidents and refused to use it. The sitter read potty books with her, tried to give her stickers, and some other options to try and get her to go but she wouldn't. I even talked about using the sitters potty while we were at home and when I dropped her off I had DD show me where it was and stuff. Then day two and she has one accident, goes and gets the sitter, shows her where it is and then refuses to go and must've held her pee for the rest of the day cause there was no more accidents. When we got home that evening she went in and used our potty.

She doesn't want to use the little potty, or the donuts that go on top, just the "big" potty. When I ask her why she won't go at the sitter's she says she "doesn't want to" and will when she gets home. I'm at a loss of ideas. Do I take something away until she goes? I don't want to sit her in time-out but do you think it's an option?

TIA and sorry this ended up being so long! =)

Re: Refusing to use potty at sitters?

  • When DS went to the sitters we brought the potty that we worked with him on.  We did that for about 2 weeks (carting it back and forth) and at the same time at home we worked on him with a potty ring.  When he was comfortable with the ring we bought an identical one for daycare and he uses that now.  He never had any issues.  Perhaps she's having a bit of a power struggle with the DCP.  The DCP might want to take the pressure off her (meaning DCP) and use a timer.  Set it for 30 minutes and when it goes off THE TIMER tells your DD that its time (and not the sitter) and give her praise for going, M&M etc. (whatever you do at home).  Once she's good at the 30 minute mark, then increase it to 45 min, 1 hr, etc.  Since she's doing so well at home, I'm sure in a matter of time she'll pick it up.  Just let her get use to it.

Also, I know my DS was the first to PT at DC so he never wanted to tell the DCP because he was fearful he'd loose his turn/place in whatever he was playing with.  So my DCP lets him take it to the bathroom and puts it up on the sink that way when he's done going potty he gets it right back.
