What age did you get rid of LO's bottle?

My LO is 13 months and I am trying to transisiton from bottle to cup for his milk but he is not going for it.  What age did you do it and any tricks? TIA

Re: What age did you get rid of LO's bottle?

  • At 12 months we stopped giving her a bottle during the day. She drank milk in a sippy, but would have one bottle before bed. Now at 14 months we recently dropped that bottle before bed.

  • We transitioned him right before his first birthday.  We used a straw cup instead of the spout type, which seemed easier for my son.  The first two or three days we could see that he seemed confused and frustrated at times, but after that he was fine.  We did kind of a cold turkey type of transition - once we took the bottle away we didnt go back at all (and he forgot about it pretty quickly).

  • My DS got rid of it on his own around 14 months.  I also gave him a cup at meal times just to get him used to it, he liked choosing it as opposed to being forced.  Just keep trying, hopefully in the next month he will decide the bottle isn't for him. GL

  • 12 months for all bottles except night bottle... and 13 1/2 months for night bottle

  • We started introducing sippy cups when LO was 8 months old, and it took until he was about 11 months for him to take his daycare milk in sippies.  He still gets a bottle in the morning and again at night.  It works for us.
  • DS #1 got rid of them him self. He showed less and less interest in the bottle and more and more interest in the sippy cup. He was completely off the bottle at 11 months.
  • We have been doing his 3:00 pm milk in a cup for awhile now and tired to up his 11 milk to a cup also but he is not having it! I am going to keep trying and if not go cold turkey in the next month or so.

  • 11 months (about a week/week and a half ago).  We just put formula in his sippy instead.
  • Right after her 1st birthday we went down to 3 bottles/day (morning, before afternoon nap, and before bed). Then we cut out the afternoon bottle and now she only gets 1 bottle (before bed). We'll be cutting that one out pretty soon, since I think she'll do fine with a sippy of milk at night now.

She wasn't happy the first few times we skipped the bottle, but she quickly got used to it.

  • His last bottle is tomorrow night!  I don't think its going to be that big of a deal.  The night time is the only I have been slow to get rid of, its his favorite.

  • cold turkey at 15 1/2 months. He refused before that so we had to go cold turkey per pedi
  • 12.5m. Once they both got the hang of drinking out of straw sippies, we dropped bottles cold-turkey. Took two days to adjust but by day 3 they were drinking fine.

  • He was about 10 months old. He never liked bottles so we tried sippy cups and he loved them!
  • He was completely off bottles by his 1st birthday.
  • The week before she turned 12 months.
  • 12 months for all daytime bottles. 12 months 2 weeks for night time bottle. She probably would have been fine w/ it before then but DH watches her 2 nights a week and he depended on it more than she did I think! It didn't bother her at all.

  • We attempted to go cold turkey at 1 year and DS was only drinking 4-5 oz per day so now we give him 2 bottles/day - one at nap and one before bed.  It works for now.  Over Labor Day weekend I'm going to work with him to drop the nap bottle - since I'll have a solid 4 days off to be with him.

DS stays with FIL and FIL thinks it's cruel for us to take the bottle away EVER!  LOL!  He's nuts!!!

  • right after her first bday. for the first week we kept just tht bottle before bed, then fully transitioned after a week

  • We stopped when he was just over 12 months old (to be exact, he was 12 months and 1 week old.) Our pedi told us at his appt. that if you let them have a bottle until 14 months or anything older than that, they can become really emotionally attached and it is harder to transition to sippys.

  • Last week...so at 17 months. We reduced bottles down to two a day for a while, and then had to go cold turkey. It was much, much easier than I had anticipated.

  • We took it away during the day at 12 months.  She still had a bedtime bottle until 13 months.  Basically you jsut have to take it away.  There will likely be a couple days with almost no milk intake, but it will be ok.  He will start drinking milk from the sippy, it just takes time.  My DD spit out her milk the first 2 days.  Then she was fine.

  • We started replacing them at 8 months and she was bottle free by 10.5 months. She was easy to transition, we just did it gradually because we were also moving around that time.
