Sleep Habit, need some advice please.

Starting about two weeks ago DS began waking in the middle of the night, I figured since he was getting molars I would go with the path of least resistance and get him and bring him to our bed since we all needed the sleep and he was in pain and needed comfort. He also had an ear infection which he has since gotten medicine for.  Well now it has been two weeks, the molars don't bother him during the day and they are poked through the gums but he is still waking at night and now seems to expect to be taken out of the crib and taken to our bed. He rolls around so much in his sleep though I feel like it isn't safe to have him out of the crib plus it isn't exactly comfy for DH and I, but feel guilty in case he is in pain. He goes to bed in the crib without any problem just won't stay.

What should I do? Ferber? Wait it out? Hope it passes? He seems to like our pillows, should I give him one? Offer milk? So confused and tired. :( HELP mommies!!!

  • We had this happen in July, and we chose to CIO.  It took maybe three nights - the first was about 30 minutes and then just maybe 5 and 5.  We use Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child and while  I know CIO is rather unpopular, it has worked for us.  The book also suggest waking the LO yourself about an hour before they're are habitually getting up - think it said this sort of preemptive strike would take a couple of nights, but we never actually tried it.  GL and hope the family gets a good night's sleep soon!

  • Nothing but sympathy here, Margaux sleeps in our bed, too.  We're planning on changing it during my trip to Colorado and then the move, hoping with all the other stuff disrupting her routine this change will get lost in the shuffle.  :/

  • I would let him cio.  But not if he is screaming for too long.  We tried that with our 2nd, let's just say he won - he was relentless (he is quite stubborn).  Our 2 yrd old will still get into bed with us.. just last night he did (woke up from a nightmare).  Actually we ended up with the 2 & 4 yr old in our bed.. I love it, because it is a rare occasion now & it won't last forever.  But we do not get sleep with him in our bed.. I almost fell out.. how does that little body take up so much room ; )
