Pregnant after IF

on the brink of tears

I just called a highly recommended OB office - six of my girlfriends go there and two have delivered with their doctors. I'm trying to see about switching and I asked to speak to a nurse to ask questions.

The receptionist was like "I can answer pretty much anything that you need to know". Okay fine, so I start asking questions and she really can't answer them, but she sounded rushed and busy.

I just want to know how often I'll be seen, what will happen at each appointment and what I can expect in terms of care from their practice. I don't think these are hard questions.

Will I get an u/s, will I get a cervical length check, will the babies growth be checked? And how often will this happen.

FFS, you'd think I was asking something HARD to answer. I'm so frustrated.

Re: on the brink of tears

  • That is annoying!  Sorry you are having to deal with this at this stage in your pregnancy.

  • Uggg... I am so sorry! How frustrating. Do any of your friends who used the practice have a direct line to the nurses? Then you could bypass the stupid receptionist.

  • So sorry you have to deal with this.
  • Ugh, I'd be annoyed.

Maybe call back and skip the intro and ask for a nurse?  I always call my OB's office and just ask for OB triage and I get connected instantly never even ask my name.

Otherwise ask for the office administrator and explain that you want to be a new pateint but need some simple questions answered by a nurse

  • Sorry to be the lone voice of dissent but you don't want to speak with a nurse. What you need to do is have a consultation appointment with a DOCTOR and interview them. Unfortunately you're not going to get those questions answered over the phone.

this is how I found my current OB. I met with multiple docs with my list of questions and chose that way.

    This exactly.  Sorry, Niki.

    Yes.

There's absolutely no way anyone but my Peri could have answered those questions, because the answers vary depending on the patient/condition.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

Did you schedule "consults" with them and they did it for free, or were they regular appointments and your insurance picked up the cost?  Just wondering b/c I assumed (maybe wrongly) that I couldn't meet with all of them b/c my insurance would balk at the cost.

I scheduled consultation appointments with them, and payed my specialist copay for all of the consultations. We did it (OBs and REs included) probably  5 or 6 times all together.

The key is scheduling the appointments as consultations. Not as regular patient appointments.

The only  time the doctor WOULDN'T schedule a consultation was actually the RE that we decided to go with. And that was because he actually did a free consultation over the phone with us for over an hour.

  • I'm so sorry Niki. That sounds so frustrating. I really hope you are able to find a practice that fits your needs perfectly. Good luck hon!

  • Sorry you're going through this Niki. I had to find a new peri at around 16 weeks, it can be pretty frustrating. (hugs) I agree with Gen and Kim, I made a consultation with the peri that had been recommended. I think it'd be more helpful to meet with the OB in person and ask the questions directly to him/her. Good luck!

  • ugh, how annoying!

Can you call back and just see if you can schedule a consult?  Tell them that you are interested in switching but would like to sit down with a nurse or dr. to ask questions.

It seems like they are always rude / rushed on the phone but it might help if they'll let you set up an appt.

  • Niki - I am sorry you had to deal with this. Let me know if you are still looking for a new ob. My BFF lives in your area and she had a baby last year. I will ask her for her ob's #. I am not sure just how big the city is but its worth a shot?

  • Gen, Kim, Babsie - thanks I'll try the consult route. I didn't even know that was an option. I thought I just needed to talk to a nurse.

juliannat - sorry. Babies are fine and dandy :) Kicking away.

Newsbaby - send me any info you have, I'm curious who she goes to b/c the "city" is not that big!

  • I didn't even set up a consult.  I just scheduled my 10-week appointment with the Peri, in hopes that I would get to ask him lots of questions (I did!) and end up liking him (I did!)  I figured that if I didn't like him, I would scheduled my next appointment with my runner up Peri.  But it sounds like a consult is the way to go.
