Houston Babies

are you EVEN KIDDING ME?

sooo-- (here come the tears, and I haven't even started talking about it yet!)

as you may have read below, the doctor gave us formula to give to DD to help with the weight issue. guess what!!!!!!! I fed her a bottle last night at 8:30. Note: I wanted to wait till today just in case it upset her stomach, so we wouldn't be up all night.

By 9:30, she and I were sitting in the BACK OF AN AMBULANCE!! I have never freaked out so bad, or felt so helpless.

While I was feeding her, the area around her mouth started to turn red. My first initial thought is "wow, she is really suckin this down!" When she was done, she started to sound to me like she was congested. The redness and swelling spread quickly. whenever I'd try laying her down, she'd CHOKE and only fix it by throwing up massive amounts of formula.

oyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

I think we have a cow's milk allergy (says the ER doctor).

I HATE THIS!

  • big hugs!  being a momma is the toughest "job" ever!  i feel for you -- it had to be so hard what you went through last night.  but maybe the silver lining to all of this is that you've found the source of the problem?? and maybe now you can work on the solution!

i will keep both of you in my thoughts/prayers.  hang in there. you are a good momma and are doing what it takes to make sure your little angel girl thrives!

  • OMG  ((HUGS))!!!  I'm so sorry.  Not producing enough is hard enough (been there) and then having a bad reaction to the formula makes it even worse (been there too but not as extreme).  I'm so, so sorry!  :(  You did the right thing giving her some formula to supplement, you had no idea she'd have that reaction!  I'd pick up some hypoallergenic formula to supplement with (ready to feed worked better for us than powder) and see how she does on that.  I hope she's feeling better now.

  • Oh, I am so sorry.  How scary.
  • Could it be that her tummy has been rejecting your BM because of the dairy allergy?! Maybe if you cut out the dairy, she'll eat more and gain more weight?! This *could* be a blessing in disguise if it ends up solving the weight problem!

  • I haven't been drinking milk for a long time... it always seemed to make her MORE gassy (not throwing up). but as far as cheese and the like, I still have that and she's fine.

She barely spits up anymore so reflux isn't even the question right now.

I sure hope Monday answers some questions.

  • That's so scary.  Strange thing...because this happened to my friend 3 weeks ago!  Her pedi told her to supplement with formula to help with his weight (he was exclusive BF prior with formula here and there at the beginning).  She went in to check up on him at 10pm and felt he was all wet, turned on the light and he had thrown up all over the crib and his hands/feet were cold and he wasn't a good color.  They took him to the ER and gave him zofran, benadryl, and IV.  The Dr in ER also said it was milk allergy.  But my friend was kind of confused since he's had formula here and there when he was born.  Anyhow...she slowly introduced formula to him again this week and he's doing great on it.  She's doing Similac Sensitive (even though it still has the dairy protein, but is lactose free).  She's also doing ready to feed and not the powder this time.  I believe she's giving him 2oz mixed with BM every feeding this week and say there hasn't been an issue.  So it's not completely hopeless not to give formula after all of this, even though I understand how scary it can be.

  • Oh honey, I'm so sorry! I am keeping both you and your DD in my prayers.
  • How scary! I hope she's feeling better now.

We tried to give DD the high-calorie formula after her 2 week checkup when she wasn't gaining enough weight from BM. She took 1 bottle then threw up more than anyone I have ever seen. We switched to Gentlease and kept her on the generic form of that (and BM)  the whole time. I hope you can find an easy solution, good luck!
