Does your LO like Little People toys?

There are a ton on Craigslist right now that I've been thinking about picking up (since they seem easy to clean).  Does your LO like these?  Which ones do they like best?

And why is it that sets I have seen in stores don't come with the actual people, or only come with 1 or 2?  I think that it the part DD will like best, the actual people!

Thanks!

Re: Does your LO like Little People toys?

  • My girls love the little people.  They got some for their 1st birthday.  One was a bus with the bus driver.  The other was a plane with a pilot.  They do chew on the people but they like the vehicle also.  And it plays music.  Definitely worth buying.

  • We have the Little People barn and my DD loves it. It makes sounds and she chews on the barn animals.
  • DS LOVES his Little People Farm. He plays with it all the time. He especially likes to put all the animals in the silo and he also likes to place an animal in the rooster area and then slide them off the side :) Good times

  • DD got the pink car with the mom & baby for her birthday. She loves it. I have seen them in the stores, but I haven't bought any myself yet. I will probably put them on DD's Christmas list. SIL says that her 4 year old will still play with them (she has a 11 month old as well). Its something both kids can do together.

  • DD loves her Little People toys... she does like the people best, but I like that she'll be able to play with them for years to come, so I don't mind buying them. I found the airplane and bus on sale at Target... I really want to get her some of the car sets and the farm soon.

  • As a speech therapist, Little People are my absolute favorite toys.  They are fantastic!  They are great early toys to promote imaginative play and some really great language skills.  So many toys are physical or mechanical.

With little people toys you can learn dialogue - how to say hi to a friend, participate in early back-and-forth dialogue.  I have literally spent hours of my life holding a horse and a cow saying "Hi horse!  Hi cow!  I'm hungry!  Do you want to eat with me!  Yes I do!  Let's go eat!  I'm done eating!  Me too!  Let's go play in the barn!" and on and on.

Little activities like this teach your child that language goes back and forth, and that play involves two people interacting, not just playing next to each other.  That's a tough skill, and it's starting to come in between 1.5 and 2.5, hopefully.  It also teaches them to not play with their toys so literally.  You don't need to just roll the car or stack the blocks.  They can make up a simple story (a VERY simple story) and start to be imaginative in their play.  They can make that car find a friend and have a race.  They can let the horses run around the couch together.

These activities are short and sweet and can change quickly.  You don't need to spend five minutes eating hay.  But you can spend five minutes eating hay, rolling in the mud, riding the tractor, and jumping on the barn's roof.  It doesn't have to be complicated or even make much sense.

I have never found anything that fosters these skills as easily as Little People toys!

  • Yes, DS loves them!  He has a couple of construction trucks, the fire truck, school bus, carousel and I think one more.  The each come with 1 or 2 "people" but you can use them interchangeably with the different apparatuses (sp?).

    Yes

  • Right after last Christmas Target had a massive toy clearance and all of their little people toys were on sale for 50% off!  It is my understanding that they do the toy clearance in July and January every year.

As for us, we have the barn, happy sounds home, a-z zoo and a small Holiday set last year on clearance.  I thought I would give her the holiday set this year and let her "decorate" and we can also use it to learn about the holiday.   Productive Parenting sent me an activity not too long ago about going to the zoo...you pick 3 animal figures, talk about them, bring them with you to the zoo, then find the real animals.  Little people are perfect for this and I now use this idea on everything.

I believe the barn and the bus are their award winners if I'm remembering correctly...but it's been a while.  You may be able to find that info online.

  • DS has received several as gifts. He has the plane, barn and jungle building block thing. He loves them!

MIL has this and B goes crazy for it. He loves to shove all the animals in the stalls, and then take them out again over and over.

  • These are K's favorites!  She'll play with them forever on her own.  I've picked up a bunch of sets at yard sales.  She has about 20 people, all named, and flips out if she loses one.  When she does, we have to turn the house upside down to find it.

  • DD loves playing with the fairy treeland that we got her for her first birthday. I think it is a great toy that she will grow into as well. Right now she just likes to open and close things and push the swing back and forth but I think as she gets older she will like to play with the people a little more.
