pooping! question for you ladies

Hi ladies!  Kimya is taking a long nap so I finally had a minute to pop in.  I cannot believe she is 4 weeks old today!  Question for you ladies.  I'm breastfeeding and supplementing with formula.  For the past 3-4 days kimya has been having a tough time pooping and has only gone about once a day and this is with my "help" (bicycling her legs and/or taking her rectal temperature).  The thing is, when she poops, it is not hard/firm, it is runny like before.  I read in the happiest baby on the block that this is because she may be having a tough time tightening her abdominal muscles while relaxing her butt muscles.  I guess this makes sense but why would she suddenly forget how to poop when a few days ago she was able to push it out on her own?

any ideas about what is going on?  wwyd?  continue to try to help her when she gets very uncomfortable or let her figure it out on her own?

Thanks!!

  • When they're little, the gastrocolic reflex is what causes them to poop so often (food comes in, bowels make room). As they get older, they lose this reflex. I think it usually happens around 6 weeks, but I could be wrong on the timing. I'd say as long as it's still mustardy, you're good (not hard pellets and not water). Especially with breastfed babies, they can go days between poops. DS went 8 days once before a glycerin suppository did the trick. My pedi said she once had a BF baby who went 2 weeks. Oy vey.
